Guzzled half at The Tap and Barrel (?), Pontefract. Woodsy, slightly nutty malt snout. Lacy and blanketed. Watery oak, mild-like choc and mushy Malted Milk. Oaty/peanutty afters. Disappointingly, quite an inoffensive MOR caramelly/nutty sessions. How that crap in the cans scores exactly the same as this (2.49) is one of life’s great mysteries.

Cask at the Lord Roberts, Nottingham. I was disappointed to find that this pub’s former cask offerings, Flowers Original and Tetley’s, had been replaced by Pedigree and John Smith’s. However, I hadn’t sampled Smith’s on cask before. It’s marginally better than it is from the keg, although I’m not sure that this sample was in the best possible condition. It’s dark amber with malty sweetness and nuttiness, but one-dimensional and watery.

Had the odd good and odd slightly nutty disappointing pint on Cask, it varies, I generally like the creamyness to start with, and its good when I get a smooth pint.

Sampled at the Lord John Russell, London WC1 14/7/08. Deep amber coloured with a moderate white head. Malty throughout, with some sweetness but not cloyingly so. Pretty inoffensive all round.

Cask at Bricklayers Arms, Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire. Amber with a small white head. Malt aroma. Sweet malty taste, slight bitterness. Utterly one dimensional but I rather liked it
