hophead_hans (583), Bay Area, California, USA Jun 6, 2008 Bottle (750ml). Now this is a great beer. Pours with a cloudy yellow golden color and a medium head. Nice aromas of funkiness, lemon and a bit of mustiness. Flavors are more of a biere de garde style, with lost of funkiness, citrus and a bit of pepper. It lacks the coriander and ornagne peel flavor of typical American wits. The oak from barrel aging seems to shine thorugh but it is subtle and perhaps it is my imagination. Very complex body, smooth and medium thickness. A master piece as far as wits are concerned
Avengedpoet (62), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 9, 2008 Pours a very pale pils yellow with a frothy white head. Aroma is distinctly of sour funk and apples. Taste is faintly of pilsener, orange, and some spicing, but mostly of delicious sourness. Surprising amount of body for a sour and for such low alcohol. A little too bubbly, but that is to be expected, especially since I’ve been cellaring it for awhile. Nice dry, refreshing finish. Delicious, a very nice brew. Wish it were more available/cheaper. oreogobbler (173), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 5, 2008 Pours a light and somewhat cloudy with a nice firm layer of a head. Great lacing, thick and present. Sour apple aroma with some fresh peach. cherries, and apricots. The aroma is delightful and fragrant.
Sweet cherry candy flavor upfront, followed by sour apricot with some raspberries and peach. Beautiful bouquet of flavor.
Palate is smooth and well balanced, so interesting and easily drinkable.
Wonderfully crafted, I throughly enjoyed it. Marsiblursi (1430), Gö te la borrrrg, Sweden Oct 4, 2008 (Bottle) Pours hazy yellow to golden with white head. The aroma is citric and spicy up front with tones of lemon, mild lime, orange peel, coriander, ginger and mild white pepper. Light yeasty undertones of moldy basement and earthy barnyard. A touch of herbal hops and light toasted malt are also present. Just a whisper of oak wood. The flavour begins with a light toasted malt sweetness alongside some light grassy hops and a light acidic touch. The finish is dry with light coriander/ginger spiciness and a medium lemony/orange peel citric sting. The mouthfeel is light and clean without being too watery with perfect carbonation. Tiny tart. Light to medium bodied. LilBeerDoctor (635), East Setauket, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottle sampled on 09/26/08 at Night of the Funk. Pours a cloudy yellow with a white head. Aroma of sour wheat, slight citrus, and slight hoppiness. Flavor of the same sour wheat, Belgian yeast, with a super sour finish. Almost Berliner Weisse-like with the tart wheat notes. Tasty witbier! fredandboboflo (627), East Setauket, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottle from 08 Night of the Funk. Aroma of a bretted up wit. Flavor the same. Some citrus. It’s tasty, but uninspiring.
