Commercial Description:
La Roja is brewed in the Flanders tradition. We blend this beer from oak barrels where the beer has been aging for 12 months or longer. We’ve added 10 lbs. of cherries and let this beer mature for additional time in the firkin. Truly an ale of grace and distinction. La Roja is a beer that we offer year round. Roja du Kriek is a beer that we made special for you at the Great Taste of the Midwest. Mahalo Plenty.

On tap at the MBG Summer Festival. Poured a light reddish pink with an off-white head. Aroma was dominated by tart cherries with a sweet undertone as well as a sour tone that I am guessing is from the oak. The tartness balances well with the oak and there is again a sweet undertone.

On tap at MBGSF09. Hazy copper red with small big bubbled head. Aroma is big cherry with medium sweetness, slightly sour with oak. Flavor is medium sweet with cherry, slight sour, big oak, house flavor as well. Solid, reminds me of a lot of great Belgian examples.

Draft sample at MBGF Summer08. Pours a cloudy reddish copper color with an average frothy white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Good tart cherry and woody aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Medium to heavy tart cherry flavor with a good solid sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. Another very interesting beer from this brewer.

Had this at the MBGF08. Poured a hazy reddish amber color. Aroma was slight cherry, nutty and yeast. Flavor is light cherry, slight funk, yeast, vanilla. This was a lot more mellow than I expected. I would like to try this again on it’s own. Re-rate: Had this again at the MBGSF 09. Seemed to have a lot more punh this time. Really nice round flavor. I thought the most recent version was really nice.

The flavor is lightly sour with lactic acid, light acetic acid, cherry, plum skins, bourbon and oak. Medium body is very soft with light carbonation and a slightly oily texture.

MIBGF. Pours a mahogany color with hardly any head. Aroma is tart cherries, dried fruit, yeast, oak. Flavor is light tart cherry, yeast, oak, brown sugar, some spiciness. Palate is medium bodied, mildly carbonated, finishes slightly tart. Nicely done, though I expected more.

MiBGF 07: Muddy ruby brown with a minimal head. The aroma has notes of both fresh cherries and aged fruit, Belgian yeast funk, wood and some pale malt vapours. The taste starts with a nice fruity twang with a counter balance of Belgian sweetness. An undertone of wood and light pepper run throughout. The mouth feel is refreshing and warming, hit the spot without being overpowering. This is really nice and I could dig a few bottle in the future...Ron?

On tap: The aroma consists of sour cherries, vinuous notes, oak, hints of vinegar, and very faint sweet cherries. It’s a cloudy orangish-red with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with some light sweet cherries, yeast, and faint caramel. The finish turns to moderately sour cherries, oak, hints of wine, and faint alcohol. Medium bodies with minimal carbonation.
