Commercial Description:
La Roja is brewed in the Flanders tradition. We blend this beer from oak barrels where the beer has been aging for 12 months or longer. We’ve added 10 lbs. of cherries and let this beer mature for additional time in the firkin. Truly an ale of grace and distinction. La Roja is a beer that we offer year round. Roja du Kriek is a beer that we made special for you at the Great Taste of the Midwest. Mahalo Plenty.

Great Taste, 2009. One of the best aromas of the day, with notes of orange, fig, apricot, and bing cherry. On the palate is plenty of funk, and the beer shows its complexity and the craft of the brewer. Notes of dried stone fruit and red wine vinegar, with a finish of vanilla and toasty oak. Not quite as refreshing on a hot day as the other JP beers were, but this was the most complex among them.

On tap at GTMW. Poured pink-tinted peach with a loose-bubbled cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up sour, lightly-toasted cherries, oak, and vanilla over some redder fruits.. spicy touch of farmhouse character on the back.. this worked well. The flavor found dry, scratchy oak and cherry sourness throughout with some pale malt support.. vanilla sweetness surrounded. Almost no carbonation on the palate, leaving a bit of a fruit juice feel.. overall sourness was moderate.. solid brew overall.

#1 on my to try list at GTMW09. Very light body feel. The cherry dominated the flavor, but the sour and oak were REALLY faint.

[On-tap at GTMW ’09] Pours hazy reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is beautiful with big fresh cherry blending with moderate funkiness. The taste has a good deal of cherry skin tartness, but isn’t over the top. Just the right amount of barrel and funkiness makes this a standout. Medium mouthfeel, smooth, and has a bitter and tart finish. Really outstanding beer--makes me crave it just writing about it.

Sampled at the GTMW. Hazy peach color with a thin off-white head. Aroma of funk, cherry, oak and a touch of sweetness. Taste of tart sour cherries, moderate funk and mild oak. A touch on the thin side but overall a nice sour cherry beer.

Muddy collored reddish pour whispy soapy head. Lightly sour aroma lots of tart cherries coming through here as well added a nice sweetness. Avg Pal. Flavor is nicely tart some earthy leathery notes are offset by the subtely sweet cherry finish. I really liked this.

Sampled @ GTMW ’09 - Ruby hazy pour with no head. Funky sour lemon and cherry on the nose. Taste is sweet, smooth citrus with cherry overtones. Finishes with a sour lemon/grapefruit flavor with oak notes. Pretty complex, smooth, and syrupy. Expected this one to have more cherry flavor, but still very interesting as it was.
