| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 1, 2007 This black ale poured with a thin tan head. The flavor is malty and slightly sour with a carbonated mouthfeel and a chalky finish. I’ve never had a stout this sour, but I enjoyed the uniqueness of this beer. shrubber85 (3006), Wallhalben, Germany
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 19, 2007 Bottl.e Chocolate malt and a musty orange-clove aroma. Very dark brown color with large tan head. Tangy-sour apple vinegar flavor predominates with light chocolate and brown sugar notes. Really has more Flemish sour/lambic characteristics than any stout I’ve ever had - a surprise if your expecting a mellow stout. keoki182 (305), West Bend, Wisconsin, USA

I noted the same sour fruit flavors (cherry/grape) in this one as in the La Roja. Served at near room temperature, amazing. Jolly Pumpkin is a brewery I wish I could get in my part of Wisconsin. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 11, 2007 Updated: Sep 11, 2008Pours a deep brown/black into the glass. Smells roasty, some funk. Taste starts with roasty flavors, some chocolate, slight hops, then slides into sour, funk. Sourness seems to stick to the tongue more with each sip. This is one of the most interesting beers I have tried. I think it is very well made, just hard for me to wrap my head around. If you like sour beers, try this one!
Re-rate: Ok, so I was at the brewery for the perseguidor release and they gave me a small sample of a batch of obscura that was over a year old, that had been sitting in a keg. The age completely changed the beer and I felt like I finally "got it". Now I am considering what age can do to this beer. Anyways, the age version was actually quite good. I will average my two scores to reflect this. Beerlando (2353), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 8, 2007 Opaque black pour with a massive, spongy tan head. Excellent retention. The thick head sticks around until the very last drop, coating the entire glass in a thick blanket of sludge-like lacing. The appearance is about as attractive as any I’ve ever encountered. The aroma shows that same familiar Jolly Pumpkin funk. The sour brett blends surprisingly well with the ample chocolate malts that smell distinctly like Hershey’s syrup. The flavor combines semi-sweet roasted chocolate malts with sour, funky yeast and a considerable amount of earthy, vanilla-tinged oak. Medium body with an overall dry profile and a lingering sour tingle. Undoubtedly the most unique stout I have ever encountered. Not something I would drink every day, but one that must be tried at least once. Beerdedone (1888), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of coffee bitter chocolate, roasted malts, and some sour fruit. Flavor is medium sweet with caramel, bitter chocolate, coffee, and tart fruit and is sour throughout. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 3, 2007 Poured an opaque black color with a small, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, toffee, sour cherries, and strong brett. Taste of sweet cocoa, light roast, tart grapes, and a sour, bretty finish. Dry roasted malt lingers on the tongue. This reminds me of the Extra Special Gonzo, though I just can’t get into this like I got into the ESG.
