| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 19, 2009 Pours pitch black with a big frothy tan head. Aroma is heavy with belgian spice, much like a quad with cinnamon, clove, and christmasy spices, but mixes with a creamy and nutty stout aspect. Flavor starts with a bit of chocolate, wood, coffee, and alcohol, then moves to an immensely intriguing funky note, almost like an uber dark kriek lambic. Tartness is very cool, I really like it, very unique. Palate is thinnish, but not too bad for a non-imperial stout. Really interesting, and a really nice brew from Jolly Pumpkin. Glass:Lion Tulip.
Appearance:Poured a deep brown color with a three finger, fluffy brown head.
Aroma:The aroma very much resembled a sour. Sour cherries and vinegar dominate, with only a hint of roasted malt peeking through.
Flavor:The flavor was more stout like that the aroma. Roasted malt and pure cacao dominate. A slightly sour finish peeks through.
Palate:Medium/full body with solid carbonation.
Overall:The body of work here is awesome. My initial reaction to this beer was WTF??!?? After sipping and sniffing for 10-15 minutes, I began to really dig this. The traditional JP carbonation level should be toned down here, as it takes away from the beer, but overall, an excellent offering.

Nose was roasty with slight raisin and vinegar notes.
Taste is not as sour as I had hoped. Front is full of roasted malt, followed by some dark fruit sweetness, finishes with slight acidity and astringency.
