OSLO (614), Minnesota, USA Jun 26, 2008 [’06 Bottle, big thanks go to BDR for sharing this retired beer!] Pours hazy orange with a tint of red, and topped off with a small off-white head. Aroma was really nice at first with a lot of oak and raisin, but then it became more dill and watermelon. Still, very nice. Taste was lightly tart, bitter, with some butter, dill again and a lot of oak. Bizarre. Mouthfeel was a little thin with a dry finish of average length. I liked the smell of this beer, even if it was strange, but the taste just wasn’t that good.
pepsican (762), the beer wastelands of, Iowa, USA Sep 14, 2008 Thanks styles for this bad boy. Amber pour with a thin white head. Aroma is oak, grapefruit, lemon, and funk. Flavor has plenty of oak and funk, a bit of the citrus fruit comes through but isn’t quite as strong as I was hoping for after the aroma. Kind of muted, but very drinkable. I really liked this one. DrBayern (974), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Sep 2, 2008 Date: 08/30/08, 750 ml. bottle courtesy of Buffalohead, shared with CelticBrew and Doboy.
Aroma - Wonderful fruit aromas of apricot, raisins, and figs. Distinct oak notes mesh well, and a slight funkiness just adds to the mix.
Appearance - Deep ruby/amber, healthy beige head, sheets and strings of lace
Flavor - Fruity and malty up front, giving way quickly to sour fruit flavors that are not harsh, but provide a pleasing tartness and dryness.
Palate - Medium body and carbonation, leaves a clean, dry palate
Overall - Complex yet drinkable, not overly sour, balanced. CelticBrew (494), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Sep 2, 2008 Actually, compliments of DrBayern and his cellar of tidbits. Poured dark ruby red and brown from 750 ml bottle, forming nice off white head of foam. Aroma of darken fruits, deep vanilla oak, tart apples. Flavour of lovely maltyness, a bit of hops, sour fruits and darken figs. Pure joy with each gulp, Awesome and kick ass beer!
I believe this bottle was two years old. doboy (83), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Aug 31, 2008 Tried this after La Roja with our man Celticbrew who supplied this fine specimin and the nortorious drbayern. It gives a fruity nose, a cherry aroma. Lace forms nicely on this cloudy, dark ruby brown nectar. It has the same taste as the nose with the cherries. It’s sour but not overpowering. tytoanderso (1195), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Aug 8, 2008 12oz bottle. Gold foil 2006 on the neck. Very pleasant sour, funky and spicy aroma. Loads of oak tannin. Fennel. Vanilla and cinnamon. Lighter notes of tart cherries. Wet basement and slightly cobwebby. Green apple skin. Apple cider vinegar. The La Roja comes through much more on the nose than the Bam. Plenty funky and the brett has taken full hold. Pours Thick, muddy but bright copper/orange. Even a rigorous pour yields a scant white head. The Bam comes through much more on the palate than the nose. Not nearly as funky, acidic and vinegary as the nose lead me to believe. Very dry. Wet grass. Wet leaf pile. Moderately tart and acidic... much more earthy... Slightly spicy. Subdued wood tannin. Very light cherry and vanilla. Slightly flabby (oily?) on the palate. The carbonation is still quite lively, though. The finish is rather acidic, and that’s where the La Roja really comes through on the palate. A fine beer for sure, but seems just a bit past it’s prime. Eben... you teh man!
