Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

5/02/2008: Adriaan "Real Dutch Gruit Witbier" has a hazy golden yellow color with a fizzy head that disappears almost immediately after the pour. The aroma is both sweet yet a bit acidic which reminds me of apples and vinegar. This beer has a really strange flavor - sour and burnt mixed with honey, various fruits (lemon for sure, even a touch of fig) and light spice, then acidic and vinegar-like followed by some oxidation. The finish has a yeasty profile as well as some toasted wheat malt and finally some apple cider. There really isn’t any bittereness to note. This beer has a pretty light body very little carbonation. The flavor is definitely interesting and is a little bit of a put off at first but then it actually grows and becomes acceptable if not even likeable (the sour and burnt wears off quickly).

12 fl. oz. bottle (5% Alc/Vol) from Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #181 for this beer...

Bottle from a gift pack. Hazy yellow amber colour, white head. Aroma of spices, citrus, some yeast and coriander. Flavour is sweet, citrus, wheat and unusual spices/herbs. At first it tastes like a witbier, but after a few sips the unusual herb flavours come out and becomes cloying. Definitely something else, but not too good.

Bottle, 330ml at Cafe t’Kanon, Ghent. Amber to brown, clouded, with white head. Powerful boiled cabbage aroma the beer is heavy sweet and vegetal, not much in the way of character apart from being unusual.

Not a good beer, though the aroma is deacent. The taste disappoint and the after taste is dead boring. Fresh but not much more...
