11-Apr-08 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 29-Dec-07 for $0.84 from Trader Joe’s in Pacific Beach, CA) The Trader Joe’s beers are surprisingly tasty, and this Dunkelweizen is no exception. Aromas of sweet, over-ripe bananas, clovey spice, toast, and bread dough. On the palate, dry, toasty wheat gives way to assertive spiciness and sweet, ripe banana in the evolution, finishing with a more balanced flavor of banana bread and the yeasty flavor of raw dough. Full-bodied, an almost starchy mouthfeel, but with enough spiciness to give some life to the potentially heavy palate. Finely textured carbonation is moderately strong but very soft. A full inch of creamy, light-tan head forms atop the cloudy, amber-brown, but retention is excellent, settling to and holding a quarter-inch foam stand. Unfortunately, what could be a perfect appearance is marred by the complete lack of lacing on the glass since the foam just slides right down the glass. It could be said that this beer shows no subtlety as the flavors and aromas are bold and gregarious on the senses, but it’s a very tasty and enjoyable Dunkelweizen. And given how inexpensive it is, it’s a fantastic bargain.

Pours in cloudy chestnut ways with some frothy density above in an off white hue. Nose is actually quite nice, vividly banana-like with lots of sweetness with just a smidgen of styrofoam. Flavors bring back some banana yeast phenols and wheat notes...body is lighter than it should be, otherwise, I would really like this. I like the banana and wheat notes here..the body feels like it wants to be creamy, it’s just not thick enough to be there. Regardless, I think the flavors here are quite nice.

BOTTLE: dark orange brown pour, nose is malty, banana, apple, yeast. Taste is fruity, sweet/bubblegum, some carbonation/acidity on the tongue, decent.

12 oz. bottle.Pours a light beige head of good duration, with some lacing, over a cloudy dark copper (SRM 18) body....nose is light yeast (grass) bit of biscuit, some raisin, some light banana, bit of allspice....taste sweet malts to start (caramel), then light banana/bubblegum sweetness, finishing slightly dry....mouth feel is light, carbonation high. The esters dominated the phenols (too much banana, not any clove) making for an unbalanced beer.

Bottle. Pours murky orange-brown with a thin tan head. Once the head quickly disappeared it looks like a glass of apple cider. Heavy banana aroma with some clove, apple and malt. Malty, banana bread is the intial flavor before finishing with a lttle acidic tartness and lingering with more banana. Worth a try at the bargain price.

Cloudy to murky tan color with a diminishing dark beige head. Sweet wheat and heavy banana bread scent. HInts of cloves, but rather light. Not a clean yeast nose. Wheat dough flavors. Some banana and cloves also in the flavors. FInish has some metal, toasted malt, caramel and some more over-ripe banana. Really long linger with toasted wheat. A bit rough in places and a bit to sweet, but a decent wheat brew.

12oz bottle. Deep orange-brown color with a thin beige head. Solid banana aroma with a hint of sugary dark malts. The yeast strain is really solid and flavorful, but it sort of dominates. The malt is a tad thin, certainly not as thick and rich as some other examples of the style. Some crispness upfront keeps it balanced. Hard to gauge an accurate description and overall rating from RB, as the low price and generic nature of the beer generates pointlessly low ratings. Not really "bad" in any respect, just not world class either.

Thin bodied with a watery texture. Something is a little off in the taste. (Metallic and funky hop). Needs more body, more banana, more clove, and less metallic flavor.

12oz bottle from TJ’s. Pours cloudy brown with tanned long lasting head. The aroma of bananas, caramel, and brown sugar. Medium-bodied . The flavor of bananas and brown sugar, very cloying. Also lightly tart. The finish is long and sweet. On the whole, is not bad. Too much sweetness though.
