BeerEssential (91), Massachusetts, USA May 17, 2008 Slight citrus aroma with a touch of spice, perhaps not far from that of a Chimay. Very little head on top of an opaque, deep, gritty looking amber-brown. Taste is somewhat citrus with bitter-malt and slightly gritty mouthfeel. Lots of sediment on the bottom of this bottle. Quick finish. Decent, but not great.
Rynoplasty (234), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Oct 1, 2008 Pours hazy amber brown with a big tan head. Aroma is banana and maybe a little vanilla like aroma. Taste is spicy malted wheat with banana and clove in there. Very good. The_Mayor (1), , California, USA does not count Sep 21, 2008 I wasn’t sure about this beer when I picked it up @ trader joe’s, but to my surprise it exceeded my expectations. I normally get dunkelweisen on tap at this brewpub 12 miles from my house, but this beer did the trick. Its definitely worth a taste.
-The Mayor DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Sep 16, 2008 11-Apr-08 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 29-Dec-07 for $0.84 from Trader Joe’s in Pacific Beach, CA) The Trader Joe’s beers are surprisingly tasty, and this Dunkelweizen is no exception. Aromas of sweet, over-ripe bananas, clovey spice, toast, and bread dough. On the palate, dry, toasty wheat gives way to assertive spiciness and sweet, ripe banana in the evolution, finishing with a more balanced flavor of banana bread and the yeasty flavor of raw dough. Full-bodied, an almost starchy mouthfeel, but with enough spiciness to give some life to the potentially heavy palate. Finely textured carbonation is moderately strong but very soft. A full inch of creamy, light-tan head forms atop the cloudy, amber-brown, but retention is excellent, settling to and holding a quarter-inch foam stand. Unfortunately, what could be a perfect appearance is marred by the complete lack of lacing on the glass since the foam just slides right down the glass. It could be said that this beer shows no subtlety as the flavors and aromas are bold and gregarious on the senses, but it’s a very tasty and enjoyable Dunkelweizen. And given how inexpensive it is, it’s a fantastic bargain. AmEricanbrew (1009), Swamp Shreveport, Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Sep 8, 2008 Bottle. Hazy dark amber with a frothy tan head. Nice aroma is smoked malts with tart wheat. Medium body. A sweet, smoky flavor tastes like camp fire marshmellows, with sweet brown sugar and some tart wheat flavors in the background. Not too bad. Ron (749), Rochester, New York, USA Aug 14, 2008 (Vegas 2008) Cloudy brown. Lots of yeast. Wheat and banana aroma. A decent palate, with sweet flavors of wheat, banana, and light citrus. Good.
