Commercial Description:
Only available filtered and pasteurised in bottles.
Matured in wooden casks of Willoughbys Crusted Port to impart sweetness and a heavy vinous characteristic. The tradition of port is very English and many of the port houses proudly trace their ancestry back to the U.K. Portuguese wines were fortified with brandy to improve their keeping properties during shipment.
This fully fermented ale has been brewed by JW Lees as a celebration of the brewers' art. Harvest Ale can be enjoyed now or laid down like a fine wine for enjoyment to come.

2005 vintage. 9.3 oz. bottle. Pours a murky dark amber with some scattered dark floaties and a small collection of bubbles that quickly disperse and leave no lace. Pleasant aroma of sweet malt along with caramel, oak, a bit of vanilla and some alcohol vapors. I am not really picking up any influence from the port wine in the nose. The flavor is very sweet and vinous with lots of sweet malt, caramel, port wine, and oak. The port wine is well represented in the flavor. Silky on the palate and fairly full bodied. Very nice beer to sit and sip slowly.

Resinous and thick texture, little to no bubbles, unfiltered body, amazingly intense malt-driven nose. The port character is more sweet on the tongue than the aroma suggests, with some candied but aged (and caramelized) apricots, cherries and red grapes. Intensely aromatic, the woody port, toffee candy and oxidized dark fruit is exactly what I love to find in British-style strong ale.

2005 Bottle... Aroma is winey, and vinous... flavor is really sweet, lots of grape or fruit flavor and tons of alcohol. Not a big fan of this at all...

2006 vintage. Murky orange/brown pour with off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits-plums,raisons. Deliscious- dark fruits, creamy, smooth, little smoky wood at the end, sweet. Head went away quickly, but I really didn’t care. Dang! This is good. Alcohol is noticeable, and it blends well with the rest.

Pours a cloudy golden amber color with hardly any head at all. Very thin and off with white that immediately disappears with no lacing at all. Aroma is overpowered by sweet alcohol presence with notes of vanilla oak, cherry and nutty malt backbone. Thin mouthfeel with a decent amount of alcohol heat balanced by light fruit notes. There is just enough of a malt backbone to balance out the cherry, apple and pear fruit notes. A nice slow sipping desert beer for the winter months.
