Commercial Description:
The recipe comes from an 1884 Lees brewing notebook, a hoppy strong porter, brewed in November of that year, called "Star." At 7% ABV, this is more like a Baltic porter in strength but surprisingly light on the palate. There's no caramel malt only pale and roasted malt. Most porters then were brewed with amber malt or brown malt, which hardly exist today, if at all. It is smooth and supple in the mouth, full of chocolate notes and an understated bitterness that only reveals itself fully in the lip-smacking dry finish… with a subtle added background of flavors: cashew, ripe plum, orangey fruit, and just a pubby hint of an open pouch of moist Cavendish tobacco. Manchester Star dries into a long, almost wine-like finish.

Red-brown pour with a brown head. Hop aroma and rasted malt, faint dark fruits, and a little sweetness. Sweet malt taste, smooth, creamy. It had a nice aftertaste.

Everything I like in a beer. Dark body, hearty aroma, creamy head that lasts, and the typically complex flavors I love in English brews . I will be getting more of this.

Pours black with off-whit generous head. Licorice and malty aroma. Above average mouthfeel. Good representation of English porter, most drinkable black licorice mostly, some chocolate malts. Not very sweet.

Black in color. Smells like light malt. Smooth understated delicate nose for a porter. Roast comes out more as the beer warms up. Good typical porter. Don’t love it, but there’s nothing to really dislike either.

Rich rum raisin smell ~ beautiful lively tan bubbly head. Taste is realyl delicious, with plum accents, chocolate cherry tones, and a slight sherry burn. This carries a hearty malty backbone that holds it all together nicely. An exceptional beer with an amazing focus on balance.
