Jan 18, 2008 on tap-pours a thin off white head and amber color. Aroma is hops (cascade), syrupy-medium malt. Taste is hops (cascade), syrupy-medium malt, alcohol. Sipping. OK carbonation.

Apr 25, 2008 Marks for appearance are an average, as the beer was tasted in weak artificial light after dusk. Very grapey-hoppy nose, dark grapes, raisins in rum - and some more hops. Bitter-grapey; dry taste; dryness even affecting the MF that seems thinner than it probably is. Vinous. Very slick, nearly viscuous. Ah - Karl Strauss can make something good if they put their minds to it.

Mar 4, 2006 Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla: A pronounced mahogany color, nose of cherry, caramel plum, raisin, nice hops on a pleasant level. The flavor is dry and tangy, sweet chewyness and a stout body and mouthfeel. Nice nose for a barleywine but not the best.

Dec 20, 2005 9th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Fest: Clear dark amber with a huge off-white head. Aroma of sweet big malt. Smells like freshly steeped grains. Sweet malt. Toffee with some nut. Moderate bitter finish ends with piney hops.

Jan 15, 2009 Tap at Carlsbad. Pours a translucent copper with golden notes and a medium creamy off white head that laced. Aroma of dark fruits, toffee, floral, citrus and hoppy. Flavor of pine, grapefruit, toffee, nuts, caramel and moderate hop bitterness.

May 5, 2006 Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla. Clear, dark copper color with a bubbly off white head. Strong grapefruit hop nose and flavor balanced nicely with a cotton candy sweetness and dired fruits. Slick and heavy in the mouth with lingering sweetness and bitterness.

Nov 2, 2007 tap @ hams pours opaque amber with no head. Sweet, light, dried fruit nose. Taste is sweet, thin and after drinking some of averys beast 07 vintage this is less than stellar.
