Dark reddish dark brown in color. Light to little head. Strong aroma of raisins and alcohol. The malty sweetness pervades. Easily the best poured by Strauss. riversideAK (2779), Shoreline, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 6, 2007 Huge pine hop nose covers up almost all malt aroma. Almost smells like a DIPA. Beer pours a reddish amber. Flavor is more pine hops, then sweet sugary malt, then some dry hop resins. This is a full bodied beer, but still a very drinkable well balanced barley wine. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 28, 2005 Aroma was juiced up with a big floral aroma of hops and some malt character. Colored a deep mahogany red and accompanied with quite a impressing sized head being it was poured from tap. Flavor had a tangy sourness of hop and the malt was a reminder that this was also a barleywine. By far Karl Strauss’ best beer for the person who prefers a more complex taste. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 2, 2006 On tap at Columbia Street brewery. Dark copper color with creamy off white head leaving a thick sheet of lacing behind. Medium strength aroma of piney hops and rich caramel malts. Flavor has nice assertive pine hop bitterness to balance the load of malts in this beer. Certainly a west coast style Barleywine. Very tasty. BückDich (4857), McCall, Idaho, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 4, 2006 Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla: A pronounced mahogany color, nose of cherry, caramel plum, raisin, nice hops on a pleasant level. The flavor is dry and tangy, sweet chewyness and a stout body and mouthfeel. Nice nose for a barleywine but not the best. danielcurtis81 (909), San Diego, California, USA

I especiallt like the hoppy bitterness. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
