Commercial Description:
A Belgium-style ale brewed with the changing seasons in mind. Firm toasty and sweet coffee-like malt flavors are underpinned by a subtle vanilla oakiness. Peppery spice adds character to this beer’s slightly dry and warming finish. 35 SRM 24 IBU 15.5 Plato

On tap @ Torreyana Grille, La Jolla. This was excellent. Nice malty body, yet light and refreshing. Sweet, with a little spice. When Karl Strauss wants to, they can make beers as good as any of the top breweries in San Diego.

Draft at CityWalk in Universal City. This was superb. I’d call this one a dubbel. Clear reddish brown. Heavy lacing. Heavy, pungent brown sugar aroma and malty notes, also dried dark fruit. Palate has the plums, heavy candy sweetness, along with a tartness and a grainy backend. A bit spicy and peppery. Fantastic.

Draft at the La Jolla brewpub. Poured a deep dark brown with a thin white head. Nose was heavy bread and yeast. Flavors of Belgium yeast, and burn popcorn with some roasted malt. Full bodied. Decent brew, probably better if I was more into Belgiums.

(11/2/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in downtown San Diego. Clear brown color. Aroma of malt, some nuts, light roastiness, faint coffee notes and some fruitiness. Sweet flavor with some roastiness and coffee notes, dark fruit notes, a bit of spiciness and a rather dry finish. Medium-bodied.

On tap @ Hamilton’s. Pours a medium brown with a frothy off whit head. Nose had some dark fruits and a touch of Belgian yeast funk. Flavor was lightly fruity with again a touch of Belgian yeast.

Tap at La Jolla location. Deep dark brown beer with a creamy tan head. Aroma is lightly nutty and cocoaish along with a soft pruny/plummy fruitiness. A nice dark toasted malt along with some soft clove and coriander. A touch of licorice and allspice also. Chewy and sweet but not too sweet. Soft and fruity and very well-balanced. These are some of the better Belgian-style brewpub beers that I’ve even had... I know that Strauss is typically a German brewer, but these last few beers have been quite excellent.
