Commercial Description:
Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one. Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavor IPA.

Tap @ downtown location. Poured clear copper with a short white head. Minimal lacing. Light, grassy aroma with piney hops, white pepper, and citrus. Watery mouthfeel. Refreshing taste, mostly grapefruit and a light bitter resiny taste. Some mineral and bread flavors, dry finish. Came across as an IPA-lite.

[On-tap] Pours decent amber color with a small lingering off-white head. Taste isn’t too bad. Nice fruitiness up front—grapefruit and tangerine with a little alcohol, some faint carraway, and then dominant malt that carries through to the end. Too malt driven for my liking, but not bad. Aroma is pretty good, although really not much that is really interesting worth noting about it. Just citrusy hops with some grassiness mixed in, a touch of peach and some malt. Pretty good mouthfeel, very smooth, dry finish that is a little short. Overall the mouthfeel is the strength of this beer, but it actually is pretty decent, and very drinkable. If the hop character was jacked up in the taste, and increased a bit in the nose as well, it would be a very solid beer.

On tao in the Karl Strauss taproom in LAX terminal 2. Bright orange amber, piney resinous aroma and flavour, grapefruit. Lightly toasty malt, dry, very bitter finish. Really nice.

Pours a clear mid golden yellow. Nose is faint with earthy hops. Taste is watery with moderate pine hops, mild bitterness, and alcohol heat. Meh.

12oz bottle. Pours slightly cloudy, medium copper with a creamy white head. I light lace in the glass that dissipated quickly. Aroma is bitter citrus and piney. Taste is what you would expect from the aroma. It finishes with a bitter malt flavor that leaves an antiseptic taste on my tongue.

12 oz bottle. Pours an attractive dark copper with a finger or so of white, fluffy foam. Aroma is faintly of grapefruit and pine, just as the description promises, along with some brown sugar, or something of the sort. Initial flavor is extra bitter, with the palate mellowing quickly to bring in some cinnamon flavor to balance out the malt, hops, and overriding pine. The grapefruit appears ot have taken a hiatus... Wait, no, it’s still there, but the body loses overall integration after the mid-palate, and so the subtleties get lost in the disintegration of the body, fading into a somewhat watery, though not displeasing, finish. This is a quality beer, for one produced in such quantity. About what you’d expect from Karl...

bottle thanks to the tick loving bhensonb. poured a nice amberish gold with a soapy white head and some lace. aroma had a strong malt backbone and maybe a bit of cereal or biscuit and the smallest hint of pine. flavor was grass, alcohol (like cheap vodka), pine and some caramel. medium body with medium carbonation. thanks bill for yet another step to 1000.

This amber ale poured with a decent off-white head and a toffee aroma. There is a substantial caramel malt flavor that is a bit harsh, and some pine and citrus caused by the hopping. This is a drinkable beer, but not especially satisfying.
