Definately a porter, not a stout. Red tinted with a coarse tan head. Very mellow, sweet, chocolate nose and similar palate with a hint of dry roast flavour lingering on the end. A very pleasant beer.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 4, 2007 This stuff tastes exactly how I wish James Squire Porter tasted. Dusty cocoa, molasses/rum, golden syrup, a touch of harder roast character and no Tooheys yeast aroma!! Extremely thick, chewy body for its size. Very black with a weird multi-toned head kinda like scrambled eggs. Pretty gutsy stuff. Cool can too. Thanks to Linc, my new bestest friend in the whole wide world. zebracakes (1215), Washington DC, USA

Flavor is subtle creamy chocolate and a little bit of bitterness. Mouthfeel is a bit milky and watery...but fine for a porter or sweet stout i guess...this is one the better ji-birus i’ve had on my trip. IslandHaole (1035), Onna-Son, Okinawa-Ken, Japan
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 3, 2006 A beautiful, near black color with a two-layered beige and tan foamy head. Looks like a black and tan or a latte. A nice if simple scent with equal parts baking chocolate and coffee. A creamy feel with sweet, strong roasty flavors up front, the dark chocolate comes through as it warms, either in the glass or in your mouth. This is another well made stout coming from Japan. jazz88 (2237), San Francisco, California, USA

On my second to last day in Tokyo I was told that in the basement of big department stores they sell microbrews. This was one of my finds. A chocolate stout in Japan! It had a dark brown color with a foamy brown head. The aroma was sweet with chocolate and coffee.
