The aroma has notes of citrus, hay, malt, bread, and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of bread, alcohol, malt - almost chewy, and hay from the hops, leading to a bitter finish where the notes of alcohol and hay lingers. The alcohol tickles the palate. This beer is being rated here because it’s the only Heller Bock listed on Atkien’s website. Both have an ABV of 6.9% Once I get a definitive answer from Atkienbrauerei or the importer, Wolfgang Morandell, I will either move this rating, enter a new beer, or delete this italicized note.
This pours a bright gold body with plenty of visible carbonation and a large white head. It smells of honey, grains, and a hint of apples. The flavor is very sweet and full of alcohol, honey and apples, with little trace of hops. It’s the alcohol that cuts the sweetness somewhat, finishing on a hot, sticky sweet note. Maibock it may be, but it fits right in with the frigid weather that we’ve been having.
