Commercial Description:
Ein starkes, helles, untergäriges Bier. Es ist weder süß noch wuchtig, sondern herb und frisch – wie das Allgäu im Frühjahr!

Bottled. A hazy golden beer with a thin white head. The aroma has notes of citrus, hay, malt, bread, and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of bread, alcohol, malt - almost chewy, and hay from the hops, leading to a bitter finish where the notes of alcohol and hay lingers. The alcohol tickles the palate.

Bottle 50 cl. Clear golden with an off-white head. Sweetish grainy aroma. Medium body with a solid malt base, and a fairly distinct bitterness and alcohol in the finish. 100709

(50cl bottle) Large white head atop crystal clear apple juice body. Aroma is medium sweet, dough/bread, some caramel, light peach. Taste is moderately sweet, bread/caramel, honey, peach/honeydew, light alcohol, grassy. Medium body, some stickiness, easy drinking for the ABV.

Bottle sampled on 12/2/06: Pours a pale clear golden with a wispy lacing white head. Aroma of sweet pale German malt with some caramel and light fruity notes. Starts sweet, fairly viscous, and German malty with some light fruity complexity for balance. A decent Heller Bock.

Note: Drinking from a bottle of Atkien Maibock. This beer is being rated here because it’s the only Heller Bock listed on Atkien’s website. Both have an ABV of 6.9% Once I get a definitive answer from Atkienbrauerei or the importer, Wolfgang Morandell, I will either move this rating, enter a new beer, or delete this italicized note.

This pours a bright gold body with plenty of visible carbonation and a large white head. It smells of honey, grains, and a hint of apples. The flavor is very sweet and full of alcohol, honey and apples, with little trace of hops. It’s the alcohol that cuts the sweetness somewhat, finishing on a hot, sticky sweet note. Maibock it may be, but it fits right in with the frigid weather that we’ve been having.

Bottle from State Line. Medium gold pour with 1-finger off-white head. Aroma of apricot, honey, pale malt, hopcitrus, slight white peppercorns. Tastes fruity at first, matched by a solid hopcitrus and a firm amount of malty sweetness, but not too sweet.
