This bottle had not one, but two places on it for a date: a Best Before AND a brewed on date, but NO, I had to take a gamble and lose. Not a total loss as I could tell that the male and hop combination was one that I would have enjoyed had the carbonation not been so lame and the whole of it suffering from no telling how much aging that it obviously was unable to endure. Is it the brewery or importing agent that decides to leave the date information off the bottle? What a tease. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 3, 2005 Beautiful deep cherry wood color with a formidable frothy tan head. Trifector of prunes, plums and pears partner with chicory, English toffee and molasses for the aroma. Sweet chocolate and caramel flavor delight. Brown sugared empire apples interspersed with some tin and a near hickory-smoked flavor edge. Dry chocolate helps to reap a sweet, permeating presence on the palate. Well-balanced and finishing like caramel drenched pepper wood. Quite a nice rendition. Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jun 16, 2005 Old bottle by the looks of it. Thin head, body is dark rusted red. Slight malt aroma. Taste is soy and molassis, with an oxidized finish. Medium body, sweet and syrupy. Maybe this was too old, oh well. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 25, 2005 Solidly dark, deep mahogany color, with ruby edges, virtually headless, though.
Aroma: dark fruit, raisin and plum, fig.
Taste: smooth, supple, delicious. Danced merrily on the tongue, maintains a medium-to-full body, flavor never quits...tasty, but simple. That’s okay once in a while, I guess...the palate doesn’t need a challenge all the time. Velvety smooth...definitely worth a try. Cornfield (4963), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 14, 2005 What gooey, sticky stuff! Pouring a rich brown color with ruby highlights and a slender tan head, this has sweet malty, douyghy aroma. Full-bodied and smooth, this has deep malty tastes coupled with those of dark dried fruits. It’s got a long, malty finish and leaves the moustache sticky. Good doppelbock! snowtiger (106), Brighton, Colorado, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 23, 2005 Deep ruby/brown color with tiny bubble biege head. Slightly malty/bready aroma. Malty, bready taste, with hints of plum and raisin. Veryrich wih a lingering malt aftertaste. Smooth, rich beer. frylock (1025), Buffalo, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 13, 2005 Mahogney color with a medium off-white head. Bready malt aroma with hints of smoke. Fairly sweet, some cocoa and doughey malts, hint of plum. Not bad. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Dec 22, 2004 Light brown in color with a mostly diminishing head of light tan foam. Dry, somewhat medicinal and totally unpleasant aroma giving hints of of herbal german hops and malt aromas of caramel, molasses and dark fruits. Malt accented in the flavor and fairly subtle and smooth. Fruity (plums, raisins, figs), caramel and a hint of herbs. Overall, just a little too gentle for my palate and it has an unpleasant malt flavor.
