Dry, somewhat medicinal and totally unpleasant aroma giving hints of of herbal german hops and malt aromas of caramel, molasses and dark fruits. Malt accented in the flavor and fairly subtle and smooth. Fruity (plums, raisins, figs), caramel and a hint of herbs. Overall, just a little too gentle for my palate and it has an unpleasant malt flavor. ColoradoBobs (31), Colorado, USA

Almost chewy. This is how a d-b is supposed to feel in your mouth, so smooth you hardly want to swallow it. I actually prefer this to Salvator and Optimator. This is smoother, rounder, deeper, and richer than either of them. TChrome (1303), Bedford, Texas, USA

Warm and grainy nose with caramel & hazlenuts building in the surprising chocolateyness. Soft, full bodied, sticky and toasty, with vinuous hints. well rounded with good balance. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 28, 2004 Dark amber to brown liquid with a smaller off white head that settles to a small cover. Heavier malt aromas with hints of caramel, toast and nuts. Lighter nose of herbal earthy hops. Fuller feel, without getiing in the way. Sweet malt start with a mildy toasty middle. Finish is still sweeter, but a touch of hops with some pepper and acids help tame the cloying nature of this brew. Warmth sinks in towards the end of the quaff. Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 14, 2004 The beer upon its removal from the 500ml brown bottle sets in my dopplebock glass a deep ruby to almost brown with a smallish frothy light tan head that evaporates quickly leaving the lace to conceal the glass. Nose is malt sweet, hints of molasses, earthy and pleasant to the senses, start is sweet with a middling malt profile; the top is light to middling in its feel. Finish is modestly acidic and the hops pleasantly spicy, quite dry and somewhat bitter aftertaste, a drinkable beer.
