Pours a reddish-brownwith a nice tan head that doesn’t last. Caramel malt aroma. Buttery sweet roastwed malt taste along with notes of licorice. Slight hop bitterness; no alcohol taste or burn.

Pours into my 25cl tulip with a three-finger thick, amber-tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, concentrated cranberry hue when held up to the light. Ah, rich, fairly concentrated malt aromas greet my nose. A mix of caramelized malt sugars, browned-crusty multi-grain bread, brown sugar, raisin-like malt and basically a whole slew of other concentrated malt descriptors that I can’t quite think of. Almost has a jam-like, though not quite fruity aromatic note here.

Thick and rich like a Doppelbock should beer; the beer coats the mouth with creamy, lightly sticky malt goodness. It is still not overly heavy and would be perfectly quaffable on a cold winter’s night. Somewhat sweet up front; the beer has just enough complex, chewy malt character that this does not become cloying. Flavor notes reminiscent of traditional, moist, rich, German black bread, hints of molasses, a touch of chocolate / lightly roasted coffee. A touch metallic in the finish (perhaps tinny), though not overly so and it is barely noticeable. This one hits on all the right notes for a Doppelbock, though for some reason it seems to lack the qualities that would push it to the next level; a downright solid brew though.

Pours dark brown and thin from a bottle. Smells and tastes like liquid spouted 8 grain bread. There’s some honey in there, some earthiness. But the palate is a bit too thin for my blood.

500ml bottle: Poured a deep crimson brown with a very thin head. The aroma is somewhat brown sugary, but the flavor is distinctly candied apple, quite sweet and malty. Maybe just a drop of chocolate here, but I can’t get away from the orchard of flavors. A bit light bodied for such a flavorful brew. (#2956, 6/4/2007)

Bottle sampled on 12/2/06: Pours a deep dark copper with a thin, wispy-lacing light tan head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel malt and a touch of bready German lager yeast. Starts with a nice, sticky caramel malty flavor and some lightly chocolatey complexity. Smooth, yet full-bodied and authentic.

Bottle: pours dark brown with a thin offwhite head. The head is not long-lasting, but a nice thin film stays throughout the entire glass. Dull sweet aroma, a bit earthy. Quite pleasant. lightly sweet flavor, hints of fruitiness. Finish is more bitter, but the diluted fruit taste stays throughout. Pleasant beer to drink,

Slight fruity sweet carmel taste, big and bold but not too overwhelming. Fullbodied. Thick deep red in color. Apple-esque in the finish. A very nice beer.

Bottle poured a clear brown with a small disapating ivory head. Aromas of prunes, molasses and a hint of licorice. Palate was light to medium bodied. Flavors of toasted malt, molasses, fruitiness and cocoa with a smooth finish.
