Medium to light gold, quite fizzy, slight head. Aroma of bread and wet hay. Flavor was decent, towards the bready side, with some grassy and floral hops underlying things. Not as crisp as I prefer, but not a bad brew either.

I poured the golden straw beer into my 50 cl glass and admired the slight head that was building with a ton of bubbles beneath it. The aroma was faint, but the first taste revealed a hoppy light bodied style with an element of tartness. This was one of the better Pils I had tasted recently as I was researching beers for an Oktoberfest dinner I am creating this Fall by tasting them all.

Bottle poured a clear yellow with a small lasting white head. Aromas of bread, straw and a hint of citrus. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of bread, straw, some graininess and a hint of citrus with a crisp bitter finish.

Bottled. 02.06. Beer is clear, light gold with a small, white, frothy, mostly and rapidly diminishing head.<P> The aroma is malty with a light note of toasted grain; Moderate hoppy note of herbal straw; Light miscellaneous note of honey.<P> The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic/dry and lean with a longish, lightly sweet, lingering lightly bitter finish.<P> The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is fizzy. <P> Minimal, flawless and totally enchanting.

(50cl bottle) Medium white head atop clear pale straw body. Aroma is medium sweet, bread, faint grassy. Taste is medium sweet, cereal/bread, hay/grass, faint apple. Bitterness becomes slightly more pronounced as it warms. Slight dryness in the finish. Light-medium body, some crispness, light chalk, fairly drinkable.

Bottle: Pale straw, basically yellow, quite clear, moderate carbonation, fairly large white foamy head, nice lacing.   Soft grassy malts, a little bit of hay/straw.   Moreso straw on the tongue, mild sweetness, comes out more as the beer warms up.   Slightly dry, very clean.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, yet somehow a bit big for a Pils.   I still enjoyed it regardless, even if it did feel a bit heavier.

Bottle, best before some time in 2006, at Hollingshead Deli on 3/22/07
Moderately full white head tops a brassy-gold body with just a hint of amber. Clear and filtered, force carbonated too, with minimal lacing and moderate retention.
Taking in to account its age, the beer seems quite nice. Flowery german hops (hallertauer/saaz most assuredly) in the aroma were no doubt fresh and appealing and in more quantity than most pils. Residual grassiness provides aroma and light bitterness, while honey dough flavored malts comprise the remainder of the aroma. Some light acetyldehyde, though not in too high an amount, accompanied by a moderate fruitiness reminding me of golden apples and pears. Doughiness thickens as it warms and breathes, but there are no oxidative notes. Medium strength of aroma.
Aside from some golden apple sweetness/tartness up front, a distinct grain/biscuit-like flavor dries things out initially and is very pleasant. Doughiness fights back on the finish and though some thicker-than-preferred honey/dough notes persist, it’s also lost much of its carbonation since bottling, and being past its best before date, I certainly can’t take points off. No doubt a more brisk carbonation would help disperse some of the sweet maltiness. Still, underattenuated is underattenuated, no matter how you slice it, and this beer could stand to be decidedly more dry for the style. As well, there’s a moderately toasted malt note which injects light sourness/acid that I could do without. Almost gives it a corn-like flavor (lagering flaw?). Nice beer, though, with the cleanliness (for the most part) and hoppiness that are must-haves in this style. Score reflects how this beer would have tasted fresh. Oh the things I do for a rating...(though to my credit, I am certainly not rating the next beer I had, Bischoff Pils that was 2 years past its BB date).
