Kaufbeuren Steingadener Dunkle Weisse

Hazy brownish amber wood color with fine, lacy head. Pleasant musky yeast aroma of phenols, predominantly a light cloviness, with an open fermentaton twang of malt cider vinegar and hints of farmhouse and residual, unattenuated malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit too smooth, you wish the flavor clings a little longer. Light phenols and re-emergence of that cidery farmhouse quality. Finish is lightly flat and wheaty, but for the most part, neutral.

Not the best Dunkelweisse.... Pours a thick amber, with tons of yeasty "floaties" with an off-white head that diminishes to nothing. A soapy, whiskey nose predominates. The flavors are of extremely yeasty sours, some lightly mellow Jolly Rancher citrus, with a finish that closes on multiple sours. The mouthfeel is light and zesty, almost as a commercial "malt beverage". Not complex, and unilateral... not a lot to comment on, actually... not diverse.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a yellowish head. The aroma has notes of nuts, butterscotch, and wheat. The flavor is sour with notes of butterscotch, citrus, and wheat, leading to a dry wheaty finish.

Very yeasty and somewhat buttery aroma with traces of walnut and feet. Clear, watery, brown, medium head. Very sour wheat flavor with roasted barley toward the end. Unique and delicious, but has neither complexity nor balance. Hearty and sour with absolutely no bitterness or sweetness. When considering the sourness, it really defies classification. The more I drink, the more I like it. Uprated multiple times during the course of sampling.

Bottle. Poured a dirty brown color with a short lasting head. Aroma was better than expected; sweet malt, banana, and fruit. Flavor was pleasant, but too subdued. Some decent wheat and banana notes, with some doughy qualities. There just wasn’t enough of it. Ok, but unremarkable brew.

50cl bottle in Denver. Not bad at all. Dark brown pour with a slightly sour aroma that was also heavy with biscuit. More sour in the flavour. Good but nothing I would search out..

500ml bottle picked up at Stateline Liquors, MD. Toffee amber brown color, minimal head. Looks filtered. The aroma seems a little off to me, possibly an old bottle...almost red a mild red wine and malt aroma. Crisp and effervescent on the palate, much cleaner and smoother than your typical Dunkel-Weizen. There is a slight fruity berry taste, assumably from the yeast and dark malt coupling. Very drinkable, but not exactly top notch stuff.

previously tested on BTO 03/2007: Dunkel und trüb, viel stabiler Schaum - gut. Fruchtig säuerlich, ansatzweise schokoladig.
