fordest (1778), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Apr 27, 2008 12 bottle produced a beautiful pour with cascading brown head. Could have been more black and less brown, but still nice. Aromas were nice too. Caramel and chocolate all the way. Flavors fell off quite a bit with metal and bandage and no chocolate or coffee, barely any roasted malts. Strange bitter aftertaste. Maybe hints of candy sugar, but not much.
DrBayern (977), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Sep 22, 2008 12 oz. bottle on 09/22/08, courtesy of Doboy. Aroma - Dark caramel, roasted nuts, husky grain, and some mild chocolate. Appearance - Sizable light tan head over a clear deep ruby/black body. Head persists throughout the glass, and leaves some stringy lace as a bonus. Flavor - Full dark malty sweetness, very soft hop bitterness toward the end. Palate - Medium to full body, gentle carbonation, some stickiness and bit syrupy. Overall - A little too sweet for my tastes, but drinkable. JCB (1066), Durham, North Carolina, USA Sep 15, 2008 12oz bottle at my departmental picnic - thanks to whoever brought this! Fairly modest pour, with a slightly disappointing head (which translated into an overly thin body). Decent malty aroma, a bit confectionary, but there were some pleasant roasted flavors and moderate hop bitterness to make the taste somewhat enjoyable. Average porter, but I’d have it again. RedSox2004 (176), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Sep 12, 2008 Poured deep opaque black with a one-finger tan head. Coffee/espresson aromas are stronger with molasses and licorice in the background. Flavors match the aromas, but not as strong and only a light roasted maltiness, and includes a subtle hops kick. Light carbonation, light to medium bodied, and a dry finish. Middle-of-the-road for the style, but very drinkable. wbdace (42), los angeles, California, USA Aug 22, 2008 Pours dark brown with nice head and fair lacing. Coffee aroma, bittersweet flavor.
A drinkable porter. Brewsmith (55), Torrance, California, USA Aug 8, 2008 From a 12 oz bottle purchased locally from Trader Joe’s. Aroma is dark chocolate with a little molasses and maybe some licorice. Color is a brown/deep ruby red with a small tan head that laces nicely. Flavor is toasty fairly dry with the bitterness balancing the malt. Not too much roast character. Not too heavy. Finish is dry and toasty. A pretty good, easy drinking porter.
