Commercial Description:
Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale™ With a little creative curiosity, we used spent bourbon casks, fresh from decanting, and filled them with our very own Kentucky Ale. From barrels that once held the finest bourbons of Kentucky, we present Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, a smooth, golden elixir unlike any other. Subtle yet familiar flavors of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrel. We attribute this to what the bourbon maker calls the “angel’s share”. Elegantly smooth and modestly carbonated, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a fine sipping ale with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted Kentucky bourbon.

I agree that this is underrated. Light color--I didn’t know this was an amber, but I could clearly tell that they were using just a basic ale base and then giving it the bourbon barrel treatment. An intense burst of bourbon--not a ton of wood, but lots of bourbon with a strong vanilla note. ABV is not much hidden. Frothy pour and palate. MOderate aroma, little dimensionality revealed there. I’m not a huge fan of the frothiness though it helps cover up the underlying thinness of the body. On tap at Brews, Granville, OH.

On tap at the Vintage Estates, nice place. Big foamy head. Crystal clear yellow. Slight off aroma; a little vomity, but in a beery way. Plastic flavors. Astrigent and bold. Artificial at times. Weird and ropey finish.

Bottle a friend brought me back from a recent trip to KY. Poured a copper penny color with a fairly pure white head. The aroma is pure malt with a strong dosing of vanilla and oak. Flavor is much of the same with a small touch of citrusy hops. It has a creamy mouthfeel without the heaviness. Finish is sweet and warm with a touch of the alcohol. I really enjoyed this.

Another beer sent to me by bluesandbarbq (thanks Lou!) on a small trade. This one was a really nice beer, but didn’t resemble much of an amber ale, but it picked up a ton of the bourbon characteristics. Perhaps using a style as weak as an amber ale was the whole reason behind this beer, and it really worked. The aroma is huge bourbon notes, vanilla, some soft caramel, and very light alcohol notes. Body is the color of cream soda, clear with a rocky off-white cap. Flavor is bourbon and apple juice, some buttered bread with a ton of sweetness still there. If you are looking to get a fix of a bourbon beer, this fits the bill nicely.

Clear orange body; minimal head. Aroma - bourbon barrel, oranges. Light hoppy bitterness; wood. Lots of bourbon in flavor, of course. Very light carbonation. Tasty, quite powerful. It’s a little bit simple and one dimensional, but I still think this is a little underrated.

Hazy gold pour, thin white head fizzles away. Vanilla extract and oak marry poorly, leaving an overly sweet, cloying, bourbon nose. Overly sweet, hot flavor of malt and bourbon. Way too simple, thin, and un-enjoyable.

Had a bottle at Cheapside Bar & Grill in Lexington, KY... Clear amber in color, thin white head. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Mouth was smooth and relatively light. Bourbon is noticeable, but there was a strong vanilla taste with it. Very drinkable for the ABV.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a lingering off white head. Aromas of bourbon, oak, vanilla and light carmel. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a smooth finish. Flavors of bourbon, oak, vanilla, carmel and light fruittiness with a smooth lingering bourbon finish.
