Commercial Description:
Cold Smoke Scotch Ale earned a silver medal in 2002 and a gold medal in the 2007 NABA brewfest. Formulated with Montana grown 2-row barley, northwest Goldings hops, and lotsa love, this hearty ale drinks very smooth. Not bitter at all and not too sweet either. Novice beer drinkers have been known to take a taste and then say, “WOW! That’s not what I expected… that’s GOOD!” A hint of roasted barley lends a slight coffee-like smoky finish. It packs a 6.5% abv punch. Perfect after a day of rippin’ lines on area or your favorite back country getaway. Available in 16 oz aluminum cans. 6.5 % abv (alcohol by volume); 11 IBUs (International Bittering Units)

Tasted 8/13/07. Pint can. Ruby amber shine with a brown tint. Spiraling off-white head. Sweet sugary syrupy nose. Truly inviting aromas. Rich full and delicious. Touch light but totally quaffable. Tight effervescence. An odd Frankenberry fruity marshmellow flavor, but it works well! Pleasant and totally tasty!

Thanks to Skyview for sharing. Pours a dark roasted auburn color. Nice sweet smoky malt, with a nice sweet toffee presence on the nose. Very full creamy mouthfeel with an almost tannic like vinous sweetness to it.

Picked up single can via trade with kyzr and brought back to share with Minnesota gang. Pours a clear dark brown brew with a thick off-white head that has good retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, a touch of smoked peat and oak wood, with a touch of vanilla and toffee. Taste is medium bodied, low carbonation, with flavors of caramel malt and more smoked peat. Finish is smooth with a gritty aftertaste. No bitterness with this Scotty in a can.

Canned. The aroma has standard malt. Flavor just a hint of smoke as well as very lightly roasted malt. Clear brown appearance, and lacking in flavor or aroma, especially for a style that lends itself to complex, full flavors.

Draught @ Big Sky: This one pours a ruby tinged brown color. It has a fairly decent frothy off white head on it, but it doesn’t last too long. A bit of a roasted, sweet malt to the nose, as well as some smokiness. I didn’t really get any peat out of it, as I might expect in a scotch ale. A good medium body and flavor. Mainly the sweet roasted malts that were in the aroma, as well as some of the smokiness. Some lurking hops for balance, but fairly hidden. Decent!

Skyview just keeps bringing the goods from out west! Dark brown color with a thick head. Aroma has a bit of vanilla. The taste is mostly oak, smoke (peat) and some sweetish malt. Almost grainy finish.

Thanks to skyview for sharing. Brown color with faint head. Light malty nose with a metallic taste on a faint grainy body. Didn’t get a lot peat in the malt.

In a 1-pint can from the Albertson’s in Belgrade, Montana. Pours a deep dark brown color with a slight tan head. Early malty aroma, medium body, full mouthfeel (a bit carbonated), malty-sweet flavor balance with a slightly dry finish. I’d take it camping or rafting.
