Commercial Description:
Reportedly the widest and heaviest double-decked lift bridge in the world, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge connects the cities of Houghton and Hancock here in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. So get a lift from this American Brown Ale; a rich, dark brown color, complex malt flavor with hints of chocolate and caramel and a mild hop finish.

Can. Not much of a nose. Kind of a classic brown. This one is real creamy and not very carbonated, which I personally like. Soft going down, but almost sticky. Sweet, with a little bit of raisins and even cola, but I’m sure I’m tasting these due to the fact I just read about them in the post below me. I think this beer is kind of everything one would want in a typical brown. Pretty damn good!

Can sampled on 7/10/08: Pours a transparent amber brown with a thin, fizzy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of lightly toasty caramel sweetness with some doughy nutty character and a touch of tart earthiness. Body starts thin and effervescent with a drier earthy bitter finish. Pretty bland and not very drinkable.

Pours a lovely cola brown with a creamy brown head. A sweet, almost over ripe fruit nose. That’s where the beauty ends. For a beer this dark it has a VERY watered down consistency on the palate. Some brown sugar and nutty flavor, but with a gallon of water added. Not horrible, but disappointing. It looks much better than it is!

I was going to a pool party and needed cans of beer so I picked this up blind. This is a brown beer with a short lived beige head that shrank to a lasting ring. Brown sugar sweetness and some toasted grains in the nose. Brown sugar sweetness with some nuttiness and burnt toast astringency. The grassy hops come out in the finish. I drank the rest of the six pack out if the can in the pool, which was pretty cool.

In the can from a Mackinaw City Quickie Mart. Pours an deer amber brown with a good sized off white head. This has a muted aroma of nuttines and mild hops. The flavor was surprisingly quite good. This is full bodied with lots of milky malty caramel toffee with a decent amount of balancing hops. Because the packaging was so damn ugly, I thought this would be crap beer, but in fact, I really liked it.

Clear brown pour from a can with minimal head. The aroma is nutty and vegetal with a slight metallic tang and some spicy hops. The flavor is cereal and almonds with a pronounced noble hop like twang in the finish. Very little sweetness from the malt. Medium, dry body with lots of carbonation. Not the most amazing beer, but it makes for a solid canned beer to pack on camping and canoe trips to Northern and Western Michigan!

Light walnut brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is brown sugar malr with a touch of bitter hops. Flavor is malty up front followed quickly by a dry, tangy hops kick. Comes across as a bit watery and thin but still a decent beer.

filtered amber brown with a nice tan head, sweet malt and hop nose and a bit piney in the hop department, northern brewer flavors, much more dry than expected, i wouldn’t mind some more sweet malt characters in here, dryness lends to a thin mouthfeel, mildly roasty, a nice american styled brown ale... in a can!

Can. Translucent brown-red body, thin, tight cream head. Sharp nose with tangy, somewhat metallic grain husks and brown sugar. Body light with cocoa puffs, toast, and grassy hops. Bitter finish with an acidic bite. Has the same thin tangy "rough" graininess as their other canned beers. This beer could use more heft and a softer delivery.
