Commercial Description:
An authentic German style lager brewed with pilsner, dark-roasted Munich, and dark caramel malts. The result is a deep, golden-colored beer with smooth body. The best ingredients create the best beer. We use a bottom-fermenting yeast strain from the Weihenstephan yeast bank from Freising, Germany, and aroma hops from the renowned Hallertau region in Southern Germany. ABV 5.5% Bitterness 22 IBU. Contract brewed under the brewer name Hopfen Und Malz for Costco by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company.

Brown with a small head. Aroma is grassy, earthy, musty, corny. Not at all pleasant. Flavor is for the first time in a while, almost undrinkable. Like cooked vegetables and corn.

12 oz. bottle from Tmoney99. Pours a clear amber color with a small disappearing fizzy white head. The aroma is bready malt with moderate sweetness along with a general fruitiness. The flavor is grainy malt, earthy, with a slight fruity character. Slightly metallic at times. The finish has some bitterness. Light to medium bodied. Very little is offensive with this, the lower score just indicates there is not much going on to cause me to want to drink this again.

Bottle from Costco - Cincy. Poured a clear copper color with a large frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate tart citrus and sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium malty bitersweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

I’ve not had too many beers from this brewer, yet this one seemed superior to the others (though that’s not saying all that much!). Nose was decent...lightly hoppy with yeast notes. Flavor was also ok, but unremarkable, with the same light hoppiness coming through. I’d certainly take this over a BMC offering, but it’s hardly a brew to seek out, if you’re looking for something in tradition of fine German lagering.

Bottle. Amber pour. Short white head. Aroma is caramel, grassy hops, light toffee, fruit and nuts trail mix and buttery biscuit. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, fruit and nut trail mix and light grassy hops. Body is medium with a bubbly carbonation. Ends with more caramel, light toffee, dried fruit, nuts and grassy hops. Not too bad!

Local bottle. Clear brown colour with a medium foamy, khaki head, lots of carbonation and decent lacing. Aroma is sweet malt and apricot. Pretty clean taste but maybe a little metal in the middle. Some hops and bitterness pop up in the aftertaste. Decent considering the source.

Tallahassee, Fl - Costco - 12 oz bottle - part of a 24 bottle variety pak for $18.99 - not a bad deal. Medium copper pour with a slight bubbly white head. Aroma has some toffee accents, some tootsie-roll like cheap chocolate and a hint of wort. Flavor has some toffee, a hint of chocolate and some ripening vegetable notes. Mouthfeel is slightly metallic and starchy. Not bad for the price and my fridge is full of beer for a few weeks!

Thanks to Sam for the fun. Smell is horrible, like a porto-potty. Flavor isn’t much better. Trying to be a typical macro-lager but it even fails at that. Plus, I don’t know what part of Germany they make crappy beers like this in, but remind me not to go there.
