Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at brewpub (Klásterní Pivovar Strahov, Prague)
The look: Dark brown body with large beige head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but more fruity (too fruity). Acceptable.

(Rating #1517)

My Bottom Line:
Fruity caramel leaks from every malty pore, spreading its sweetness onto the salient bready base. This Tmavé might be a tad too sweet for serious sessions, but it’s well crafted nonetheless.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam settles on the copper-laced dark brown.
-That prevalent fruitiness is redolent of grapes and juicy plums.
-The bready pils malt perfume is alluring.
-The body is soft and round.
-There are barely any hops in the finish, so you can’t really say balance is reached.

on tap at vinarna hrozen, plzen, after work this afternoon. browny purple with a reddish tinge around the edges and steady off-white head that lasted all the way down the glass. aroma of fresh strawberry, stainless steel, toasted marshmallows, buttery texture, quite woody, decent coffee character and quite a dry finish. balanced and extremely drinkable

Red-bowrn colour, medium-sized head. Great aroma. I can smell chocolate, malt, roasted malt and coffee. That’s what it tastes like, very complex with hints of coffee, chocolate and caramel. Roasted malt. Slightly dry, especially in the finish. Great!

Pours a dark amber with a lingering, lacy off-white head. A bit of flowery hop influence in the nose. Taste of vanilla, molasses and toffee with a bitter-clean finish.

Dark brown colored, little light brown head. Chocolate, hops, mild licorice, butter and fruits in aroma. Medium bodied. Chocolate, mild licorice and some roastiness in flavor, aftertaste lasts with sweetness and chocolate. Fine dunkel.

[bottle from Galerie Pivni] Clear, dark brown with a fizzy yellow top that quickly recedes to a thick ring with floating patches. Noble hops fill the nose along with toasted caramel and some dried fruits and coffee. Considerably sweet flavour with watermelony malt accompanied by modest Saaz and coffee notes. Very low bitterness. Smooth, though a bit too sweet with a clean finish, medium body, and low carbonation.
