Commercial Description:
A full-bodied, traditional I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

Very nice IPA here. Bold hop aroma and flavor are things I love, this beer did not disappoint. Aroma was citrus with some grapefruit and a sweetness. Flavor followed suit. Body was refreshing and the finish was smooth bitterness. Nice.

Draft at the brewpub in Honolulu. Solid amber in color with a moderate white head. The nose was on the sweet side showing off citric and floral hops. In the mouth the hops were balanced by some sweet malt leading to a rich midpalate with a dry/bitter finish.

Draft at the brewpub. Amber body, PNW hop nose, small head. Balanced between US hops and crystal malts. Not special.

Sampled on drought beachside in Waikiki. Pours amber, a bit hazy with a lemony-yellow head. Aroma is big time hops, floral, sweet and tart. Taste is also very hoppy, bitter and crisp. As fresh as the sea mist after a crashing wave. Really nice cutting taste, especially after you’ve had a few other drinks. Aftertaste is a little burnt caramel. Good stuff.

Taster - Kona Brewing Co. - Koko Marina Pub - Honolulu, Hawaii
2008 – Great Hawaiian Beer Run
Aroma – Medium Hops aroma with a nice malt background.
Appearance – Golden yellow in color, nice head and clear.
Flavor – Nice easy to drink 65 IBU’s IPA. Had good use of malts also.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, good IPA texture with a dry finish.
Overall – This was a decent IPA had the flavor nothing over the top. Just a good easy to drink IPA.

I had this beer on tap at the brewery while I was on vacation there. This is light amber in color with a slightly off-white head. It has a very strong hop aroma with heavy grapefruit aromas. The flavor is surprisingly malty, but the hops do dominate. This beer has a high level of bitterness, as is expected. The hop flavor makes apparent the use of dry hopping. This medium bodied beer has decent drinkability, but I would have rated it higher if I was a bigger fan of double IPA’s in general.

On draft at the Kona Brewery, Hawaii. Had this one next to the Fire Rock Pale Ale, and the Castaway had a much fresher, stronger hops presence. Not so much that it was more bitter, but rather there was more of a fresh, pine-y, resin taste due to the dry hopping. This was a nice change of pace from the typical IPA.
