Commercial Description:
A full-bodied, traditional I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

Draft @ Falling Rock: Clear dark amber color with a medium off-white head. Nice big piney aroma. Matching big piney flavor. Some sweet malt as a base but hop foward all the way. Moderately bitter long dry finish.

On draft at Kona’s main brewery. Most disappointing of their offerings, just not quite balanced. The hops are a bit too bitter.

On tap at Kailua-Kona Brewery. Quite a nice IPA. Good fresh hops aroma and flavor, substantial body without being overly malty, and very well integrated alcohol strength. A great drinking experience out on the patio surrounded by their geckos.

Draught, Kona Brewpub, HI. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel), moderately hoppy (grapefruit, resin, apricot), with notes of peach, tangerine, and soap. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, heavily bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Distinct soapy smell came on as this one warmed and slowly made it quite off-putting (original aroma score was a 7). None of the other beers in our sampler had this problem, so I’m not convinced it’s as simple as a poorly rinsed glass.

Had this on-tap at the brewery. The beer was a light, hazy amber color with a small, creamy, off-white, mostly diminishing head. The flavor was initially lightly sweet and heavily bitter with a super-long, shiveringly bitter finish that was full of floral retronasal notes that made it worth enduring through it. The body was light-to-medium with a watery texture and fizzy carbonation. I don’t usually enjoy super bitter IPAs, but this one had a lot of interesting qualities that left me looking for more.

On tap @ Faling Rock poured a clear copper with a small amber head. Aromas of citrus and pine. Palate was medium bodied. Flavors of carmel and grapefruit rind with a dry bitter finish.

On tap at the Kona Brewery Brewpub in Kona. Probably the only IPA on the island, this one is worthy of the visit to the brewery (the food is excellent too!). Very deep orange color, possessing a teriffic hoppy nose, I was in IPA heaven. They really should bottle this one too.
