Commercial Description:
Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Imperial Stout is an assertive, rich and hearty dark stout complemented by freshly roasted 100 percent Kona coffee. The stout style is a Russian Imperial stout, historically brewed strong to survive its long voyage from London to the Baltic region. Course ground dark roast 100 percent pure Kona coffee beans were added to the brew during the aging process. The beans were grown and harvested by Cornwell Estate in Holualoa. The brewers were able to watch freshly harvested beans being roasted before transporting them to the brewhouse and adding them to the batch. The beer will be served on nitrogen, giving a smooth, creamy mouth-feel that complements the roasted coffee flavor.

"now we’re talking. i love the pipeline porter, which is a porter brewed with Kona coffee. this is the imperial stout version, so apply all the goodness of the porter, and apply to the body and full flavor of an imperial stout. Yummy!"

Smells like a small shop that sells only coffee. Very dark brown but clear color. Sweet mocha taste, light coffee end. Thin body, almost a porter. The nose on this is great, the rest is good too.

On tap at Koko Marina. Poured a deep brown, almost black with a thin tan head. Aroma was awesome with notes of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, and dark fruits. Flavor was primarily coffee, but chocolate was present, along with a slightly bitter finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. This was my favorite beer at the pub.

On tap, at Koko Marina Brewpub. Pours dark chocolate brown with a small tan head. Aroma is rich with mocha, espresso, and perhaps some fig/plum. There is black coffee, vanilla, and creamy milk chocolate primarily, resulting in a delicious blend that asserts coffee without being weighed down in bitterness. Palate is creamy, and finish is memorably long. I’m proud of my local brewpub for creating something this world class!

On tap at Kona Brewing Co Koko Marina Pub. Pours a nice deep brownish black with a decent light brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate malt, barley. Flavor is chocolate, roasted coffee, nice thick mouthfeel and well balanced. Good Imperial Stout.

Pint- Kona Brewing Co. - Koko Marina Pub - Honolulu, Hawaii Served in a snifter/tulip. The server did not know the name just that it was a coffee imperial stout. I went to the bar to see that the tap handle was indeed Da Grind Buzz. Served way to cold for my liking. After warming up a bit the aroma improved and the taste was much better. Small tan head with great lacing in the glass. Mouthfeel was much better after warming up and left a nice coffee taste in my mouth. Roasted malts and chocolate come through on the finish making this enjoyable. Not my favorite Impy Stout but definently better than most.

2008 – Great Hawaiian Beer Run
Aroma – Huge coffee and dark malt aroma.
Appearance – Dark Black in color , nice head and clear (if you can see through it).
Flavor – Deep rich and huge coffee and imperial stout flavor. Wow this was good.
Palate – Great Impy Stout Mouthfeel, good texture with a dry finish.
Overall – This hit the spot wow this beer had flavor for the next 3 beers. Full of coffee and chocolate and Dark malts this was the beer for the night.

I had this beer on tap at the brewery while I was on vacation there. The worst thing about this beer was that they don’t bottle it and they didn’t have it available in growlers while I was there. I made sure to stop back at the brewery right before I got on the plane to have one last pint. It’s that good. It pours jet black with a very thick mocha head that sticks around for a while. The smell is great and reminds me of smelling ground coffee beans, chocolate malt grain, and black patent grain. It is exceptionally creamy with coffee, roasted, and chocolate flavors. Many of the coffee stouts that I have had an associated bitterness with the coffee, but the use of 100% Kona beans seems to have eliminated that bitterness. It has an excellent full body. The only reason that I don’t give this a perfect drinkability is that the ABV is so high. This is probably my favorite Kona brew. I wish I was back in Hawaii now...
