Commercial Description:
Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Imperial Stout is an assertive, rich and hearty dark stout complemented by freshly roasted 100 percent Kona coffee. The stout style is a Russian Imperial stout, historically brewed strong to survive its long voyage from London to the Baltic region. Course ground dark roast 100 percent pure Kona coffee beans were added to the brew during the aging process. The beans were grown and harvested by Cornwell Estate in Holualoa. The brewers were able to watch freshly harvested beans being roasted before transporting them to the brewhouse and adding them to the batch. The beer will be served on nitrogen, giving a smooth, creamy mouth-feel that complements the roasted coffee flavor.

Straight black, the head quickly recedes to a lasting sheet of light brown foam. Slightly lactic nose reminds of pastry cream and sweetish rooty vanilla as much as it does dark chocolate. The coffee roastiness is there up front, but the global feel reminds me of a foreign stout more than an impy. The tendency keeps on in mouth where brown sugar flavors intersperse the beany, quite roasty malty profile with full coffee flavors and supporting hops. Quite drinkable for the style though the mouthfeel suffers a bit, thinner than it feels. Yep, a nice one to pair with homemade cookies I imagine. Not quite what I expected, but who the hell has expectations for an imperial from Hawaii?

On tap at the 10th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival: Pours a mostly opaque with some dark ruby mahogany hues and a large cascading dense light brown nitro head. Aroma of some toasty butterscotch and roasty espresso beans. Body starts rich and caramely sweet with good dark chocolate and fresh roasty coffee. A pretty nice coffee stout.

Draught, Kona Brewpub, HI. Head is fully lasting (nitro). Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, coffee), moderately hoppy (resin). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Strong resinous hops and a pushy sourness in the finish kept me from finding too much delight in this one. Good, but not something I’d order again (sampled twice on two different days).

9th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Fest: Nitro. Black with a tan head. Big fresh roasted coffe with some chocolate on the aroma. Sweet roasted malt flavor. Coffe is much lighter in the flavor than the aroma. Notes of chocolate. Light bitterness in the finish. Smooth and silky body.

Tasted at the 2004 Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest. Dark black color. Small head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate and a hint of vanilla. A medium bodied imperial stout. Malts are chocolate and coffee. Roasty, toasty malts. Nice coffee flavor. Smooth taste. Nice dry finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

My favorite beer at PP Strong Ale. A nice Impy Stout with a real espresso kick. Rich cocoa, bittersweet chocolate, almost full bodied with a nice alcohol kick. Rounding it all out is a nice hop bitterness that makes it all blend together.

Thank you, Logan, for prompting me to sample this at GABF05, even though it was "tapped out." I did the secret handshake you taught me and I was rewarded with a big sample. The beer was very roasty, rich, and very creamy. Curiously enough, as I tasted it, I kept thinking of a well made coffee ice cream. Mild aromas of vanilla and coconut surfaced in the finish and aftertaste, with a small nip of alcohol and tobacco coming up in the rear. Kept looking over my shoulder nervously for the ATF. Freshly brewed coffee exuded throughout ... and I love coffee.
