Commercial Description:
Lavaman Red Ale is a malty, red ale with strong caramel notes and a subtle chocolate malt flavor. The pronounced maltiness is balanced by the delicate blend of Pacific Northwest hops resulting in a smooth, full-bodied beer.

On tap at the Kona Brew Pub on Oahu. Poured a deeper orange / copperish color with a small sized head. Aromas of floral hops, light citrus and malts. Tastes the same hoppiness with some toasted malts and light caramel. Light lacing left on the glass.

Draught. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted light bread), lightly hoppy (grapefruit). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.

Red, as you'd expect, with a toffee head. It has a caramel character, slightly hopped, almost nutty at the finish. An excellent amber.

Tap. Light toffee malt aroma. Hazy red amber color with minimal head. Sweet berry malt flavor. Decent but standard amber ale.

On tap downtown Kona (can’t remember the bar): Bright copper hue gained it points but the quickly fading head lost some ... kind of offset to the middle. Prickly, very lively carbonation made the medium-bodiness (with a somewhat sticky base) seem lighter than it was. Malts were toasty and nutty, with a disappointingly mild sweetness. Weak hops followed in the background, producing a stark and dull bitterness (herbs, flowers, plant stems, earth). Aftertaste was one-dimensional and a little unpleasant. This one didn’t do much for me. Not balanced (flavor-aroma-wise or bitter-sweet-wise). Can’t even say this’d make a good session beer.

Fair nose and some hop presence. Drinkable I suppose, but only fair to average as ales go!

Taster - Kona Brewing Co. - Koko Marina Pub - Honolulu, Hawaii
2008 – Great Hawaiian Beer Run
Aroma – A light amber ale aroma this was weak.
Appearance – Amber reddish in color, nice head and clear.
Flavor – A light flavored amber ale. I was expecting this beer to give me a buzz on my tongue. Not even. Sorry go back re-brew.
Palate – Semi decent Mouthfeel, nice texture with a dry finish.
Overall – his beer was off and did not fall in the best of category. This was one of the worst I had all night. It still scored well but other beers where soooo much better. This beer was plain.
