Commercial Description:
Limited release. Swimming in a fresh water pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is what we all imagine we would find in paradise. On Maui, follow the old Hana Highway and you will find such a place – Wailua Falls. This plunging cascade of clear water is the inspiration for our Limited Release Wailua Wheat. This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrusy flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.

Editor's Note: Lilikoi Wheat was renamed to Wailua Wheat (both on draft and in bottle).

12 oz. bottle from Giant. Pours a watery butter yellow with frothy white head that dies pretty quickly. Aroma is, quite frankly, nasty. Smells like I opened the wrong bottle and there’s really a bunch of cigarette butts and chew spit at the bottom of this one. While its difficult to move past the horrid smell on this one, the taste is much better. The body is weak but there is some citrusy fruit front palate here with a sour middle of something and an aftertaste of toejam. WTF? I don’t get it. I’d pair this with about six other decent beers and hope I was wasted enough by the time I got to it to actually drink it.

Clear, bright gold appearance with a flat, white head and sparce lacing. Subdued, wheaty aroma with soft fruit accents. Taste offers some spicyness along with the wheat and fruit. Well carbonated mouthfeel is a little thin; finish is shortlived. Would have liked the passion fruit to be more pronounced.

12 oz bottle. Pours a yellowish color with small white head. I get just a hint of skunk in the aroma at first, but it fades into corn flakes, a little bit of alcohol, and mashed potatoes. The flavor is sweet and grainy, with a little bit of a fruity note. I would have no idea there is passion fruit in this if I hadn’t read it on the label. The finish is a slight fruity twang and a quick fade. Not all that great.

Solid golden yellow with a white foam. Aroma is spicy, metallic, weak wheat. Taste is metallic, citrusy, fruity, some more wheat.

Kona makes quite a few good beers, this one was not one of them. Too watery consistency, an interesting concept that fell short.

Slightly hazy golden with white head. Lemony aroma. Lemony/citrus flavor and very light body. If I wanted lemon in my wheat beer, I’d add it myself. Not a fan.

Pours a light golden color with almost no head or anything else for that matter. Nose is wheat and fruit (not sure if I smell passionfruit or not). Definitely fruit in the mouth. Pineapple, guava, passion fruit all hit mid palate. Not heavy at all and finishes crisp and clean with really no bitterness or aftertaste. I guess on a hot summer day in Hawaii this could be good. I would bet it would taste incredible if I were drinking it in Hawaii.
