MartinT (4316), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 17, 2007 Any first impressions?
-Out of a chalice, this sheet of foam impresses, ably covering the brownish ruby.
-Firm raisins, dates and molasses coalesce in a rather timid aroma.
-Fruity caramel expands onto an earthy soil, as raisins and molasses convey depth.
-The body is silky, clean, well-fed, and overall quite luxurious. One of the beer’s most impressive features.
What if you dig deeper?
-An alcohol splash teams up with the earthy, resinous hops for a potent finish.
-Alcohol presence mars the nose somewhat.
-Bubblegum esters appear in the aroma as well.
-This obviously needs to age more to round off the corners, but there is enough substance and complexity here to please you even in its youthful stages.
-A very nice strong old ale from Saguenay, right on style, clean and flavorful, although perhaps rough around the edges and underdeveloped at this stage in its evolution. This could evolve majestically, I’m sure.
