| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 4, 2009 Nearly black with ruby highlights. A slight tan head develops but disappears quickly. Interesting aroma of coffee, chocolate, and vegetables. Medium bodied, fairly lively. I’m not quite sold on the flavor. It starts pretty good with coffee, bitter chocolate, and chicory. The finish is a bit of a disappointment. A touch of smoke but an aftertaste of ash. Not a bad beer. drjay44 (801), Salida, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Draft at Helga’s. Pours a thin lasting mocha head, with attractive lacing, over a clear brown (SRM 25) body......nose is malt (toffee, caramel) some coffee, some chocolate, very mild smoke.....taste is mild coffee, minimal smoke, with a slightly bitter chemical finish....mouth feel is light, carbonation slightly high. A light beer, it is a lager, as it warms the nose and taste really develop and make for a light rich beer. lithy (1725), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 30, 2009 Appearance: Bottle pour, a dark brown color with a medium beige head.
Aroma: Heavy malt aroma, both sweet and burnt. Some hints of caramel and maple syrup.
Flavor: Very malty with sweet notes of caramel, some smoky character, mild bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Relatively light in body - a bit surprising given its appearance. Well carbonated and crisp. Lasting impression of lightly roasted malts.
Overall Impression: Overall pretty solid. A great session beer due in part to the low ABV. Certainly a cold-weather beer for me.
Comments: I would drink this again. The Schwarzbier is a nice combination of lager crispness with some characteristics of a robust porter.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Location: On tap at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook, 11/24/09, poured into a white Hofbrau stein
Aroma: Roasted malts are the dominant portion of the nose, some burnt malts, a bit of caramel
Appearance: Color looked very black with a brown head (hard to get too detailed because of the stein)
Flavor: Flavor is similar to the nose, lots of malts dominate the taste of this brew
Palate: Somewhat on the thin side (but not super thin), with a light-medium body
Overall Impression:
Overall this is a decent beer, an interesting Schwarzbier. It wasn’t one of my favorites, and it certainly could have been better, but it worked pretty well. Another nice tap selection at Capital Ale, a place I really enjoy visiting anytime I make my way down to the old stomping grounds of Richmond, VA. A good beer from a great bar.
