Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Also ratings of the Swedish 3.5% ABV version should be entered here.
Harmony between taste and beauty - Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and for more than 100 years the production of this beer has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop flavour. The high quality of the raw ingredients assures the excellent taste of the beer. There are several types of malt, natural spring water from the Křivoklát Wood and hops from the Žatec area.

Poured a black color with a small off white head. Aroma was very sweet malts and maybe some chocolate. Flavor was just too overly sweet and not much else to it.

On tap in a fat assed krug in Frankfurt. Clear dark brown with a huge tan head. Nice light smoke over mild chocolate and sweet malt. Light bodied, decent lace. Good stuff.

(Draught at Krusovicka Pivnice, Prague, 23 July 2008) Dark brown colour, almost black, with a creamy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with coffee and chocolate. Malty, roasted taste with notes of cola, coffee and a fairly molasses like sweetness. Decent, but rather boring.

50cl bottle. Pours dark brown with a thin white head lighty nutty. Aroma is lightly roasted and the taste has the same sweet nutty and light caramel malt. A little too light in my opinion. Aftertaste comes a little hoppy with a note that reminds me of a pilsner. Dry finish. Not the best schwarzbier.

(Sampled 7-5-08) Bottle poured into shaker- poured dark ruby red that was transparent, razor thin head hung around for a few minutes but had to go back home, thin aroma of a light roasted malt, weak coffee, and small hops. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt comes through cleanly, cream in the middle, very light hop finish. Not bad, not bad at all.

Can (500ml). Poured a deep ruby black with a frothy/creamy, averaged sized, tanned head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of sweetish, lightly roasted malts with notes of aniseed, caramel, milk chocolate, prunes and a hint of coffee. Flavor was similar to aroma with virtually no bitterness, sweet lightly roasted malts, caramel, milk chocolate, dates and a hint of creamy coffee. Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation, a dry/creamy mouthfeel and an ok finish. Not bad just not that memorable.

Draught @ Albatros Prague. Thick large off-white creamy head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Somewhat clear sparkling body with a mahogany color. Aroma of light roasted malt, hint of citrus, some butterscotch and nice underlying mild hoppy notes. Light bodied with an average carbonation and light thin texture. Light sweet malty flavor with a hint of bitterness. Light roasted malty finish.

Bought at ICA grocery store in Visby, Gotland, Sweden. Pours a very dark ruby brown with 2 cm dark tan head. Smells very malty sweet, with wet grain, grass and a touch of burnt popcorn. Very smooth mouthfeel--ever-so-slightly thick and with low carbonation. The taste is an immediate dose of roasted malt, albeit very toned-down (I have a feeling this is because this is the 3.5% version for the Swedish market outside of Systembolaget stores), a touch of lemon. Overall, not as sweet as it smells. The aftertaste is very much unsweetened cocoa. Overall, not bad, but I think I’d prefer the full-on Systembolaget version.
