Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Also ratings of the Swedish 3.5% ABV version should be entered here.
Harmony between taste and beauty - Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and for more than 100 years the production of this beer has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop flavour. The high quality of the raw ingredients assures the excellent taste of the beer. There are several types of malt, natural spring water from the Křivoklát Wood and hops from the Žatec area.

Pours brownish black with a light nutty brown head. Sweet aroma, sweet taste. Unidimensional but ultimately rather pleasant.

Reddish brown color when held to the light. Head diminishes to a thin film of beige bubbles. Initial sniff revealed green beans coffee and other roasted malts. A second sniff brought some hints of vanilla and pumpernickel. The first scent still linger long enough to drag this one down. Chalk and sawdust come to mind with the first swallow. Subsequent sips seem to confirm the first. Some black malt and roast malt presence, but no depth or backbone to be found in this one. A black tea with a touch of floral hops, but I’m still stretching to get that much out of this one. Liquid is quite acidic and I starts to notice a burn on the tongue. A simple boring black beverage.

A serviceable shwartzbier, about middling mouthfeel, with coconut and licorice taste. Even with the small alcohol, its a soda pop, but it worked on this hot fall day. I don’t think I could have it everyday. Black colour and some licorice and molasses on the nose.

Pours dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Slightly sweet/stale aroma with a hint of old coffee that’s been left on the hot plate too long. Flavor is equally as weird with stale licorice notes and old coffee mixed with a corny sweet lager. Palate is light and fizzy, with a stale/sweet finish.

Pours a very dark but clear ruby brown with a small tan head that falls quickly. Nose is not very strong, but carries malt scents and a slight robust quality to it. Flavor is interesting. Slightly smoked on the end. Things start off with a nice malty flavor and move on a bit of a tour to that slight smokey and roasted avenue. Feel is fairly bodied as far as the liquid feel goes. No real big attack of bubble on the tongue. Drinkable, yes. A pretty damn good beer actually. Worth trying, and could easily be a session brew considering the quality AND the price.

Aroma is strong, malty, and mouth-watering. It pours a dark reddish-brown, almost the color of cola, with a thick, tan head that does not stay for long. Flavor is malty with a hint of burnt coffee and a little hop bitterness. This beer is velvety smooth and pleasant to drink, best by itself.

Nice almost opaque black with brown highlights, nice head. Aroma faintly of powdered chocolate and sugar. Flavor was very muted, faint coffee and chocolate with an odd sweetness. Reading the bottle I see that the beer’s last ingredient was "artificial sweetner." Huh? That would explain the powdery sugary thing going on I couldn’t put my finger on. Not bad, but fairly thin and uninteresting overall.

Bottle................................good dark beer, but nothing special. Not my cup of tea, really.
