Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Also ratings of the Swedish 3.5% ABV version should be entered here.
Harmony between taste and beauty - Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and for more than 100 years the production of this beer has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop flavour. The high quality of the raw ingredients assures the excellent taste of the beer. There are several types of malt, natural spring water from the Křivoklát Wood and hops from the Žatec area.

Courtesy of Papsoe. Thanks, Henrik. Mild raisin and malt aroma and very little else that stands out. The body is a ruby hued black and holds a diminishing, pinky sized off white head. The mouthfeel is light, almost delicate with malt, raisin and mild chocolate notes. Finish is sweet and watery. Very subdued toast notes in the aftertaste. Easy drinking and nothing alarmingly negative about it for the style though it seemsto lean toward the chocolate flavor more than a Schwarz should. Still decent enough.

500ml bottle. Possibly one of the worst quality controls of any brewery - no two bottles are the same. This one was sour-smelling and with very little taste at all apart from sweet maltiness.

Draught at The Toronado, SF. Beer is clear, very dark brown with a small, white, mostly and quickly diminishing head.
The aroma is malty with moderate notes of roasted grain, milk chocolate, light notes of toasted bread crust and caramel; Trace miscellaneous notes of vinous, jammy black fruit.
The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, trace bitter with an average-length, lightly bitter, lightly sweet finish.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively-soft.

A nice schwarzbier. I am surprised I havn’t already rated this. Very dark brown color, with roasted malt and some oak. Flavor is more roasted grain, light hops, some caramel and a little wood. Very drinkable with good palate. I thought it was more of a dunkel than a schwarzbier.

500ml bottle: this had been sitting in my fridge for quite a while. Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Small fizzy beige head. Full roasted malt aroma, light chocolate and coffee. More porterish than schwarzbier albeit not as full bodied as a porter. Roasty flavor with hints of chocolate. Slight smokiness. At only 3.8%, this is a good session beer. I think it’s quite tasty and easy drinking.

Rated 5/18/07: Odd Schwarzbier, I’m still deciding if I enjoyed this overall or not. Thick dark brown pour with a foamy off-white head and a thick coating of lacing. Aroma is uneventful and very faint at first but warms up to an awkward sweetness, nothing else to note. Rich mouthfeel that fades fast, it’s decent. Flavor is a hodge podge of interesting tastes. Lightly smoked meats coupled with mild sugar, white rice, and a cardboard taste. Bottled less than a year ago, I can’t imagine this is too old to be spoiled but being an import anything is possible. Eh, initially it perked my interest but soon became simply blah.

Pours with a dark brown body topped by a thin head with some lacing. It slightly sweet and malty with a very slight roasty bitterness. Not much flavor to it at all. Light to medium bodied, watery and smooth.
