Editor's note: Also ratings of the Swedish 3.5% ABV version should be entered here.
Harmony between taste and beauty - Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and for more than 100 years the production of this beer has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop flavour. The high quality of the raw ingredients assures the excellent taste of the beer. There are several types of malt, natural spring water from the Křivoklát Wood and hops from the Žatec area.

Nut bown with a red hew. Roasted Malty aroma - nuts, caramel. Easy sweetness. Little watery body, but could be worse. Short little bitter finish. Though its very average, OK pleasant.

Dark brown red with a fine creamy off white head. Sweet roasted caramel aroma (though a little weak). Slightly watery palate.Pretty sweet with quite a lot of caramel and a little berry-like tone.

Pours dark, almost black. Sweet malty aroma. Taste is also malty and full-bodied. Aftertaste has some roasted malts and a bit of sweetness.

This is a nice toasty brown beer. It’s mild in tase and aroma. The head is tan and there’s some nice lace on the glass. I’d put this in the tasting kit for good beer newbies who are trying to get over their appreciation for Bud Light.

Light toasty malt aroma with a hit of chocolate. Deep brown, but clear with ruby hilites. Decent tan head. Starts with burnt toast (somewhat like Guiness), Seems thin, and the toasted aspect ends a bit diluted. Very nice.

Pours very, very dark - looks black except when hints of ruby shine through. The head is light tan - it pours thick but dissipates quickly (though never disappearing). The remaining head laces the glass heavily. The aroms is mild but distinctly contains roasted malts - like dark toast with a dash of weakly brewed coffee. The flavor is light. It starts with some malts and caramel. The middle of the tongue detects a little hops and some of the roasted grain flavors. The finish is full yet quenching - likely due to its lack of after-taste and watery body. The mouthfeel is a little creamy with carbonation, but feels watery - likely from the lack of strong flavor. Overall, it isn’t a bad session beer, but it is nothing special. After a quick swig (w/out holding it in the mouth to ascertain all of the flavor aspects) it feels a little thicker in body, a little malty, a little grainy, and has some impressions of burnt sugar.

(500ml bottle) Purchased at Spinnakers Wine Merchants in Vic West. Pours an medium almond-coloured head with a deep reddish body. Toasted malt aroma. The flavour has a decent complexity: bitter chocolate, toffee and a balanced sweetness. A pretty good find by Spinnakers.

Pours near black with deep ruby hues and a mostly receindg tan head. Aroma of dark bread, rye, smoke, and raisins. Taste is smokey, light notes of pepper and metallic lager breadiness. Mouthfeel is thin bodied with soft carbonation. This beer intimidates initially, fooling the drinker into thinking this might be a roasty conqueror of taste buds. Instead the beer is rather bland, and falls off quickly. Not bad, but not truly enjoyable.
