Editor's note: Also ratings of the Swedish 3.5% ABV version should be entered here.
Harmony between taste and beauty - Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and for more than 100 years the production of this beer has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop flavour. The high quality of the raw ingredients assures the excellent taste of the beer. There are several types of malt, natural spring water from the Křivoklát Wood and hops from the Žatec area.

[Bottled] Black with a beige head. Rather, metallic aroma with notes of vegetables. Sugary and burnt flavour. Pretty ok to be a low alcohol schwarzbier.

Smells from tar, smoke and some chokolate. A bit thinner taste with a hint of tar. Really fresh with only some sweetness.

Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a nicely-lacing tan head. Aroma of grainy nutty German malts and some lightly floral noble hops. Body starts lightly sweet with some grainy earthy character and a thinner, bittersweet finish with a lightly roasted maltiness. Fairly well-balanced, authentic and drinkable.

Pour is a very dark red when held up to light with a nice sized tan head. Aroma is burnt smokyness and is nice when taking that first whiff. Flavor is where this one loses everything. Very watery and thin. So much so you get nothing, im sure there are hops and malts in here somewhere but damn if I can find them. Looks good and smells good but downhill after that.

Draught at Restaurace U Lisku in Prague, May 2006. Dark red brown color, beige head. Malty and burnt scent. Sweet and a bit burnt taste. Medium bitterness, perhaps a bit higher than a "normal" dark lager. Medium to big body. Refreshing feel in the aftertaste. A very nice dark lager taht I try to drink when available on tap in Prague.

A "Böhmischen Schwarzbier" specially brewed by Královsky Pivovar for the Swedish market.
A beer sold in a Swedish store other than "Systembolaget" may have max 3.5% alcohol in it.
Bottle from a local supermarket (Hemköp).
Verk dark red, beautiful ruby. Big lasting brown head. Roasted fresh scent. A bit thin mouthfeel. Sort of acid taste, probably from the soft water combined with dark malts. Also burnt and roasted taste. Slightly roasted after taste.

This was a nice beer -- at 3.8, it’s a lighter weight dunkel, but still it’s nice to drink and full of a refreshing coffee aroma. Nice beer.

Black beer, 500ml bottle Pours with an uneven (big bubbles on the top, small on the bottom) however beautiful light-light brown head. Strong aroma of dark sugar and burnt barney. Body light though oily, floating on the tongue. Bittersweet taste of surprisingly few flawors, mostly malt but not as burnt as the aroma suggested.

Very dark chcolate brown with a fizzy but well formed head. Some lager notes on the nose, very faint roasted malts, and just a fraction metallic. Very similar in the mouth; the roast picks up a notch but still very much in the subtle mould, probably not inappropriate for the style. Drank at the end of the shelf life, and could have suffered a little as a result.
