Smells pretty good, some molasses and roast malt, with rye bread coming through on tasting. Falls away once it hits the mouth unfortunately, and this is essentially due to the low abv %. However, the low alcohol level means that more of the flavour develops in the mouth without being overpowered - not too much body, but a lasting finish. The more I drank this the more I enjoyed it. Certainly a good mid strength alternative. jrohn92 (105), USA

Typical Czech dunkel: Dark brown with a large beige head, aroma moderate malty (caramel, coffee, chocolate), light hoppy, flavor moderate sweet and light bitter, average duration, light to medium body, watery, soft carbonated. EithCubes (2168), Indiana, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 28, 2006 My German-labelled bottled of this called it a Schwarzbier, clearly the same, though. Very dark brown pour, red under light, with a tan head. Chocolate, toasted malt, and caramel. Similar taste, pleasant roasted sweetness, not cloying. A little thin. Pretty good. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 5, 2006 Bottle. Very dark ruby-brown color - nearly opaque black. Foamy beige medium head shrinks to nothing, leaving a ring of lace.
Semidry aroma mainly of moderately roasted malt, with notes of burnt sugar and coffee. A hint of ash in the background.
Flavor likewise of mildly roasted malt with cold coffee notes. Sweetish, faintly chocolaty aftertaste.
Moderate carbonation, thin to medium body.
My favorite czech dunkel. Surprisingly full and aromatic for such low abv. Some added alcohol would probably make it even better, though. Wish they made a stronger version of this.
