jsquire (2087), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Sep 30, 2009 December ’08 bottle. Huge, unmanagable ivory head over a clear amber beer. Lots of leafy hops in the nose with melted caramel and marmolade on toast aromas. Lots of sweetness in this beer with toffee, caramel, and malt syrup. The hops ride on top of the malts and leave a long hop burn on the tongue. Candied grapefruit, pinnapple, manderin oranges, chased with the piney hop resins that end in the burn. I did not get the soap that others mentioned. At almost a year, this is a big, sticky sweet IIPA, and very enjoyable. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 13, 2009 12 oz. bottle - thanks riverside!! no one can ever say that there is anything weak about kuhnhenn; the hop monster pours a very hazy light orange with frothy white head; killer nose of piney, grapefruit hops; super dank and essentially hop oil; resinous and very bitter on first sip; dry, sticky finish; oily, sweet, grassy and earthy; almost like watered down hop extract; powerful stuff CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 18, 2009 Dec 08 bottle shared by ryan on 1/10/09: Pours a transparent copper amber with a well-lacing frothy light tan head. Aroma of big fresh resiny grapefruity hops and a nice pale malty sweetness. Starts with a juicy piny citrus hop jolt and good sweet malty balance before a crisp bittersweet finish. A nice double IPA. smith4498 (825), Miami, Florida, USA May 31, 2009 Bottle shared by hopscotch. Pours hazy orangish color with white head. Grapefruit hop aroma. Caramel malt with grassy and grapefruit hop flavors. Sweet and syrupy with very lively carbonation. juiceisloose (635), Windermere, Florida, USA May 15, 2009 Courtesy hopscotch. Pours a very cloudy dark orange color with a small white head that hangs around and leaves thin rings of lacing behind. The aroma shows a good amount of hops in the grapefruit, grassy, and piney variety along with some soapiness that messes things up. Some caramel malt shows through adding some sweetness. The soapiness really comes through in the flavor and overpowers the citrus and pine hops. Medium bodied and a bit syrupy with too much carbonation and a lengthy hot, bitter finish. Not my favorite from these guys. Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA May 15, 2009 Courtesy hopscotch. Pours extremely cloudy, dark burnt-orange in color. A smooth, off-white head is small but lasting, and leaves thin, broken rings of lacing behind. The nose shows a strong contingent of several hop varietals, notes of grapefruit, kafir lime leaves, grass, and pine resin all showing through. There’s a good deal of unfortunate soapiness that mucks things up a bit. Toffee malt underpinnings lend significant sweetness to the aroma. Flavors take a turn for the worse, the soapiness intensifying and taking over the citrus and resin, strikingly bitter yet entirely misguided. Peppery floral hops intensify on the hot, syrupy, overly carbonated palate. There’s very little subtlety here. Granted, this bottle is five months old and is probably well past it’s hoppy peak, but judging by the sample I got, I don’t think it made much of a difference. Not good. GodOfThunder (855), Orlando, Florida, USA May 14, 2009 According to Beerlando and JuiceIsLoose, this is a little soapy. Thanks to Hopscotch for the taste. This has turned out to be one hell of a night of beer drinking. I’m pretty toasted by now, but I’m still going to try and enter this rate. I’m sitting on my laptop at Redlight Redlight, enjoying a night with the Orlando RateBeer crew, and entering my rates. Hoppy and soapy aroma, but nothing out of control. The hops are certainly the strongest part. Flavor is strangely bitter. Really, I don’t like it that much. Ew... but not Bud Light "ew!". I just wiped a huge booger on the table. I rule. hellbilly (1497), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Mar 22, 2009 growler from cbk regretfully sampled after younger...
pours a rich hue of copper with a thin white head and lots of spotty lacing.
the aroma is pretty faint... leafy hops, resin and pine, dried apricots, a hint of smoke and dark amber honey.
it tastes just like dried apricots as well... though the level of bitterness cannot detract from how overly sweet it is. flavors of caramel, citrus, char and pine with a harsh note of alcohol (strange since it is not overly high?). medium body with a slick texture and sharp ashy mouth feel. 6/4/6/3/15/3.4
