| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 21, 2005 Updated: Mar 25, 2005On draught 3/19/05 at the brewery. Dark copper-orange body, with some lighter gold and yellow hues and a moderate amount of off-white head, slowly disipating. Chill haze to the body. Aroma smells like old doughy brown bread, slight hints of pepper, a large dose of caramelized/candied sugar sweetness and light herbal hops. A mild dryness from the alcohol is also perceptible. Flavor is near explosive, compared to the aroma. Opens up with a lovely mix of caramel and pils malt, with sticky residual sugar clinging to the palate. Succulent yeast notes are quickly apparent. Spiciness immediately butts in to keep things balanced and there are light orange zest notes. Alcohol is lightly apparent, but not raw and domineering. Nothing jumps out and screams at me here, which is wonderful, because it is all done well and in good proportion (balance). A bit of plastic on the end detracts somewhat, maybe a bit more orange flavor than I prefer, but it’s still a very well-made, rich, malty treat. Medium-full body, low carbonation. The aroma is very hoppy, but also with hints of alcohol. The flavor is slightly sour and very hoppy, and also contains alcohol, that gives the warmth and also prickles the tongue. I’d love to try this fresh. Thanks Clark for shipping this to Jacob. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 1, 2005 Sweet and fruity, candy-like malty aroma. Hazy tan-orange with a light cover of off-white head. Strong bitter orange and light spiciness to the clean malty body with fair bitterness and mild alcohol in the finish. Definite alcohol warming, medium body and fair carbonation. Tulip glass, just above fridge temp. Sampled from a growler that had been opened some hours earlier and then re-closed, so it may have lost something during that time-frame. With ClarkVV, MartinT, muzzlehatch and Rastacouere. Aroma is like a bread factory with sweet sugars (caramel) mixed in, and alcohol hints. Thick and syrupy (for lack of a better word), with a very sweet, fruity flavor, with minimal sourness, which is why I didn’t want to say citrusy.
