12oz bottle acquired in trade with hopscotch (thanks!). Poured a medium mahogany color with a very small sized off white head. Aromas of bourbon, vanilla, citrus, toffee, raisins, plums, and cherries. Tastes of bourbon, caramel, cherries, dark fruits, and toffee. Light alcohol finish. Perfect for our night cap beer!

Poured a brownish amber color with a thin, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of raisins, tobacco, smoke, vanilla, bourbon, nutmeg, a bit of oatmeal, char, and alcohol as well. Taste of more caramel malts, cherry, bourbon, raisins, citrus fruits, light nutmeg, dried fruits, chocolate, and alcohol as well in the finish.

Courtesy Ibrew2or3. Clear, dark ruby/amber. Zero head, just a few bubbles. Smell dat bourbon. A ton of vanilla, old wood, whiskey, rich caramel, with a couple pieces of tropical fruit thrown in there. Not as complex as I had hoped, but very tasty, impactful. Full body, smooth, lightly viscous. Excellent barleywine.

Sample from 12 ounce bottle at the Mondial, Montreal (May 2007). Dark, unfiltered maple in color with just a touch of lasting head....nose very sweet, with just acres of bourbon-oaky-vanilla, faint piney hops, and an interesting whisper of mint....the body alternates between extreme thick, almost cloying sweetness and a strong alcohol character, finally settling after a few minutes into a thick dark caramel with soft rasiny undertones, very little in the way of hops, rather sticky but oh, so very rich and decadent. I’m liking bourbon more and more these days, and I’m thinking it works better with an American barley wine than almost anything else, this being a fine example.

(Rating # 1070)

Bottle at Mondiale ’07. Dark gold color, next to no head. WOw this has definetly been barreled. Nose is Caramel, hops and LOADS of Vanilla. Flavour is much of the same. That barrel ageing really comes through, very very nice barley wine.

Courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Thank you, Dave. HUGE bourbon aroma with an equally massive caramel malt aroma. Hints of vanilla, oak and pale white fruits. The body is alusterous amber.brown and totalyl headless. The first sip yeilds coconut, pineapple and gobs, heaps and metric assloads of malt, accenutated by caramel and damn near every fruit you can think of. Amazing flavor concentration here. It really floods the tastebuds with wonderfully tasty flavors. Go figure I love a barley wine.
