Commercial Description:
Gold to amber color. Strong earthy honey aroma, medium sweetness, honey dominates over the malt character. Pours a nice head. This mead is made from Michigan Star Thistle honey. Braggot is made from 2/3 honey and 1/3 malt. It required 1 year of aging for this mead to reach maturity. This Braggot will handle age beautifully. We recommend you try a bottle today and an aged one in a few more years. This mead is carbonated naturally in the bottle, so there will be a yeast sediment int he bottom. Recommended serving temperature is 50 F. This example is one of just a few Braggots available in the world.

This poured a golden yellow color with basically no head. Aroma was really sweet malt and honey with dinate noticeable alcohol. Flavor was really sweet and almost overlwhelming alcohol, interesting brew but hard to finish.

Growler from Crizay. Deep golden with no head. Very sweet with touches of grape and grain. Lots of burn on the backend. It was ok, but I could never drink more than a glass.

Growler. Pours golden with zero head. Sweet, medicinal aroma with some fruit. Flavor is like concentrated grape juice with a ton of alcohol. Very sweet, but not nearly as bad as I figured. Pretty decent but not my thing.

12oz and not retired, and 13.5% via trade with hoppymeal. Pours reddish brown with a tan head. Nose is quite sweet. Taste is sweet and rich and not anywhere near as boozy as one might expect, gotta say this is a pretty damn fine mead from a brewery that doesn’t really make much mead. Yum.

Deep mahogany pour with a frothy, off-white head and good lacing. Aroma smells of clover honey, slight orange zest, faint dark fruit, toasted nuts, and alcohol. Strong honey flavor with notes of pear, apple, caramel, and red grape. The alcohol is well hidden with just a touch of warming after you swallow. Oily, medium-full body with moderate carbonation.

On tap at the Kuhnhenn Brew Pub...should this be un-retired? Poured a medium amber color with a small sized head. Aromas of, well guess what, honey with some caramel. Tastes of honey, caramel, and some breadiness. Light alcohol in the finish.

I’m not a mead guy for the most part, because most are too sweet for me. But here I am at the World Beer Festival in Durham... and why SHOULDN’T I try it, right? I’ll try beer made from just about anything, so drinking fermented honey does not present so much of a challenge. This one was apparently aged a bit and had mellowed nicely. Dark amber pour with a light orange head. Definitely some honey on the nose, but it smelled, well, fermented, as opposed to just cloyingly sweet. Some caramel malt to balance. I don’t have much language for this, but I liked it.

Rumored to be from 2005. Thick murky amber pour. Caramel colored head and some drippy lace. Honey and caramel on the nose. Sweet warming honey flavor combined with some citrus zest.
