Commercial Description:
Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

Sampled at WBF in Durham, NC. Poured draft, a dark and dank brown, forming smallish off white foamy head. Aroma of roasted figs, raisins and raw brown sugar. Flavour was of cotton candy with figs, raisins with roasted nuts, ending with a slight hoppyness that gives this beer a unique and memorable character. Mouthfeel was sticky and gives no hint of alcohol, making it truly dangerous and delicious. Bottom line: Superb beer!

Very dark, very thick. But not as dark or thick as I expected. Flavors are numerous. Starts with raisin, coffee, and brandy. Moves quickly into whiskey and citrus as the beer heads down. The end is a little spicy, a little fruity, and very toasty. Lingering aftertaste akin to brandy.

Bottle thanks to MaltOMeal at the September RB tasting. Pours dark brown with no head. Nose is boozy, whiskey, sweet nose. Taste is sweet but not overpoweringly so, viscous, very alcoholic, nutty. The nose is better than the taste on this one but overall a nice beer. A sipper for sure.

Shared by MaltOMeal at the September Houston Tasting. Pours a dark cola with very little head. Nose of brown sugar, rich caramel, oak and whiskey. Flavor is toffee, molasses, piney hops, chocolate and hazlenuts. Rich, creamy palate with soft carbonation and sticky alcohol. Really nice beer that’s very good to share.

12oz bottle thanks to skip. Shared at the September Houston Tasting. Pours a dark brown with a slight tan head. This had a nose of bourbon, wood, caramel malt and slight alcohol. Really fantastic aroma! Taste is roast malt, wood, bourbon and some vinous fruit. Truly complex. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, sweet and a hint of alcohol. Fantastic brew.

RBSG 2008. Really big beer with a ton of flavors, so much depth of malt. I thought the barrel aged version had the flavors blended together a bit nicer, but it may have aged a bit more, even still this was really nice. Smooth palate, hints of caramel, chocolate, fruits.. maybe sweet dark cherry and plum. Still a bit hot from the ABV, but not all that distracting.

(Bottle thanks to hopscotch) Pours dark brown with red hints. Small sand colored head. The aroma is of caramel and chocolate malt alongside dark fruity tones of dark cherries and prunes. These sweet tones are well balanced by undertones of mild elder berries, juniper, mild lemony/grapefruity citrus and subtle tropical fruit hints of mango and pineapple. Hops also bring tones of wood and herbs. The flavour is vinous and malty with tones of caramel, milk chocolate and dark fruits like prunes and dark cherries. Bit tropical fruity with a nice alcohol warmth in the finish. Some hops are present with notes of mild citrus and fresh herbs. The mouthfeel is oily, chewy, light sticky, smooth and light velvety. Medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Bit peppery. The aftertaste is of syrup, brown sugar and light bitter hops. Near full-bodied.
