Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.

Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

(35.5cl bottle, brewed Aug. 2004, with many thanks to Saarlander) Hazy, dark brown colour with a short creamy beige layer. Slightly yeasty, sweet and molassy, strong dark malty aroma, subtle fruity (dried fruits) with earthy notes, caramel and liquorice. Sweet flavour, full bodied and soft on carbon. Dark malty taste, slightly fruity with caramel, liquorice and cacao; sweet and long finish with distinctive notes of chocolate/cacao and a warming alcohol presence. Lingering and very tasty brew (23.04.08).

Dark amber brownish pour with small tan head. Smells of resin, fruits and some smoke. Taste of very dark fruits balanced with some chocolate and a very inoffensive smokiness. Like other kuhnhenns I’ve had, a wonderful mouthfeel. Perfect example of what an old ale should be. Thanks pepsican and cokebottle

A- Pours a deep scarlet hue carrying a small coffee head. S- The smell is amazing and I know i’m going to blow it on the description but i’m going to try anyway. Sweet bready malt up front followed by an intoxicating dark fruit armoa, figs, possibly hints of plum which lead into a subtle hop afterthought. T- The taste seems to be the inverse of the smell, some hops up front followed by a gentle wave of dark fruit which sweeps the palate and carries an alcohol warming with it. After that wave ebbs, a hop bitterness lingers. I am definitely going to get my hands on another one and let it age for a year or two. By far the best old ale i’ve ever experienced. M- Thick with an ample amount of carbonation for the style. D- This was such a delight to drink it is almost indescribable. I definitely would not be in the mood for this all the time but on a cold winter night I can think of nothing better.

Acquired from mreusch (Thanks Matt!) Pours deep amber brown with a two finger, tan head. Nose is incredibly rich, with sweetness from summer fruits and caramel. The flavor is a bit more mellow and a touch earthy. I was actually glad, because I was afraid this would be a sticky, gooey, saccharine ridden sugar fest, even for my sweet tooth! It did have apricot and raisin influences, along with some brown sugar and molasses. A bit of a creamy mouthfeel and slight bitter, earthy finish.

Bottle: Pours a dark mahogany color with a medium-dark cream head...followed by this badass looking, wispy halo. Nose hints at oak, sweet caramel, dark roasted malts, raisins and figs. The complexity of this is amazing. Flavor has notes of dark malts, dark fruit and some wood-infused chocolate. Unbelievable brew. ISO: MORE!

Hmm... rating 150 was Kuhnhenn rating 200 was Kuhnhenn... this is rating 250... Kuhnhenn. Anyone want to guess what rating 300 will be? Bottle from Degarth, to whom I am much obliged. The aroma is brown sugar and caramel. The look is dark brown to jet black with no head. The taste is subtle bitterness with heavy molasses and dark fruits. The feel is creamy and chewy. I like.

Bottled. Thanks omhper. Dark amber colour with beige, medium sized head. Rich, complex sweet, malty aroma with almonds, wood, dark plums, dried fruits and grass. Superb mouthfeel, almost like jelly with medium carbonation. There are notes of nuts, almonds, dried fruits, higher alcohols and sweet malty - balanced with perfect feel of residual sugars. A truly fantastic beer that is hard to describe.

From a trade with footbalm last fall. The pour was an attractive swirl of brown, copper and ruby. A compact, creamy tan head takes up residence atop the beer and hangs out for a brief visit before giving way to the galaxy swirl. The aroma was thick caramelly malts, dark tart fruit, smoke and tobacco. The flavor was caramel, tart apple and smokey tobacco. Like eating a candied apple while smoking a cigar. Sounds weird but it works. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and overall this was a very pleasant experience. Thanks Eric!
