Aged malt nose with nice oxidation and added notes of mildew and sweet candy. Flavors show sweet candy malts with aged sophistication...maybe a bit too sweet for my tastes, but still good regardless. tastybeer (130), Washington DC, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 24, 2009 Shared with tarheels. Pours dark with thick head and lots of lacing. Tastes very sweet and alcohol with maple, brown sugar, toffee, chocolate. Very flavorful but the alcohol shines through, leaves a nice sweet aftertaste. tarheels86 (799), Washington DC, USA

Pours a very dark, cloudy, muddy red with a two-three finger yellow head. Great retention. Leaves spots of sticky lacing. Aroma is awesome: lots of spicy alcohol, bourbon, rich toffee, peanut brittle, raw cane sugar, maple and brown sugar oatmeal, gingerbread, cinnamon schnapps. Just an incredibly rich, sweet, boozy nose. Wow. Taste is super sweet: tons of maple syrup, brown sugar, toffee, peanut butter, chocolate. But there is so much cloying and the sweetness is a bit much- verging on medicinal. Leaves a sort of medicinal flavor on the palate. 11% is fairly well hidden. ksurkin (408), Norfolk, Virginia, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Sep 8, 2009 Tap at Blind Tiger: Rusty amber pour with a tan film of head. Very rich and sweet aroma- molasses, honey plum, vanilla and candied fruit skins. Slick body with low carbonation and lots of maltose. Despite the sugar it’s well textured. The flavor however is tough. Sugary, honeyish, dark fruits soaked in honey, candy sugar notes. Way too sweet. beerbill (1976), Laurel, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 6, 2009 On draught at the Blind Tiger. Pours very deep brown with a thin-moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left patchy lace. Very pleasant aroma of sweet malt, brown sugar and molasses. The flavor is equally enjoyable with sweet malt, brown sugar and a strong dose of molasses. I enjoy sweet beers, and this one is right up my alley. Mild bitterness at the finish. Fairly full bodied and smooth on the palate. This is a very nice old ale.
