Commercial Description:
Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

GABF 2009: Hazed dark amber with spotty halo of a head. Aged malt nose with nice oxidation and added notes of mildew and sweet candy. Flavors show sweet candy malts with aged sophistication...maybe a bit too sweet for my tastes, but still good regardless.

Shared with tarheels. Pours dark with thick head and lots of lacing. Tastes very sweet and alcohol with maple, brown sugar, toffee, chocolate. Very flavorful but the alcohol shines through, leaves a nice sweet aftertaste.

355 mL 2008 version courtesy of Glouglouburp. Pours a very dark, cloudy, muddy red with a two-three finger yellow head. Great retention. Leaves spots of sticky lacing. Aroma is awesome: lots of spicy alcohol, bourbon, rich toffee, peanut brittle, raw cane sugar, maple and brown sugar oatmeal, gingerbread, cinnamon schnapps. Just an incredibly rich, sweet, boozy nose. Wow. Taste is super sweet: tons of maple syrup, brown sugar, toffee, peanut butter, chocolate. But there is so much cloying and the sweetness is a bit much- verging on medicinal. Leaves a sort of medicinal flavor on the palate. 11% is fairly well hidden.

120z bottle, 2008 edition, via trade with FlandersNed. pours a beautiful, hazy, rosewood color topped by a thick, eggshell head with great retention and lacing. aroma is outstanding with huge, sweet malts, toffee, red apple skins, raisins, tart plums, and a touch of nutty, vanilla. flavor is wonderful with massively sweet molasses, brown sugar, toffee malts, and candied figs, with a touch of tart red fruits and earthy hops leading to a roasted, nutty, bittersweet finish. palate is rich and thick with high carbonation and a pleasant alcohol warmth. overall, a delicious, big, sweet brew.

Rich sugary malt aromas with a little mustiness. Brown colors. Rich and musty flavors, old socks wood dust and dirt. Bitter dirty duration. But in a good way.

900th Rating - 2006 Bottle - Inspired by douglas88, open it if you got it...Pours a dark viscous amber with a small beige head...aroma is huge fruity malt, vanilla, molassas and cocoa...sticky and chewy before it even gets into the mouth...flavour is rich, dark plum and raisin, and goes slightly tart into a sherry finish...might be the age on my bottle, so I’ll know once I pop a newer one...at any rate, thick in the mouth up front, but yields into a sweet tart that leaves a nice feel in the mouth...good stuff...

Tap at Blind Tiger: Rusty amber pour with a tan film of head. Very rich and sweet aroma- molasses, honey plum, vanilla and candied fruit skins. Slick body with low carbonation and lots of maltose. Despite the sugar it’s well textured. The flavor however is tough. Sugary, honeyish, dark fruits soaked in honey, candy sugar notes. Way too sweet.

On draught at the Blind Tiger. Pours very deep brown with a thin-moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left patchy lace. Very pleasant aroma of sweet malt, brown sugar and molasses. The flavor is equally enjoyable with sweet malt, brown sugar and a strong dose of molasses. I enjoy sweet beers, and this one is right up my alley. Mild bitterness at the finish. Fairly full bodied and smooth on the palate. This is a very nice old ale.
